Acclaimed British singer-songwriter Frank Turner wrapped a first leg of USA shows, produced by Live Nation, and he’s set to return in August and September! The English folk musician recently appeared at Rams Head Live!, and Steve Satzberg was there to photograph the show.

On May 3, Frank Turner released Undefeated, his 10th studio LP and the follow-up to his critically acclaimed No. 1 UK album, FTHC. The new record finds the sweet spot between youthful outspokenness and surviving midlife’s challenges: who you are versus who you wanted to be in your youth, life-altering love, fading friendships, wistful nostalgia, the mental fallout and political consequences that still linger from the pandemic era, and the more prosaic issue of persistent backache.
At Rams Head Live! on June 21, Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls preformed a 25-song set, which included eight numbers from Undefeated. Frank and his band opened the show with “No Thank You for the Music,” and they rolled immediately into “Girl from the Record Shop.”
Frank kicked off a four-song encore with the title track “Undefeated.”

Of the new album, Frank said: “There are no clichés about the difficult 10th album, so in some ways, that’s a liberating statement. But at the same time, I have a duty to justify writing and releasing a 10th album. That’s a lot of records for anybody. Also, I’m 42. Which is not a sexy, rock ’n’ roll age. But all through my career, I’ve been interested in writers like Loudon Wainwright III or The Hold Steady, people who write about adulthood, essentially.”
On Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5, Frank Turner embarked on the first-ever Music Venue Trust world record attempt where he performed the most official shows in different cities in 24 hours. In this timeframe, Turner shattered the record by playing 15 solo shows across the UK, each at an independent venue, ticketed by an independent record shop. The previous record was held by Hunter Hayes with 10 shows, and before that it was The Flaming Lips with eight. The challenge supported grassroots venues and independent record stores across the UK
At Rams Head Live!, Frank was joined by openers Amigo the Devil, Bridge City Sinners, and Micah Schnabel & Vanessa Jean Speckman. Steve photographed those artists as well! Scroll on for all of the pictures.
