Sam Grisman Project makes a highly anticipated return to Bellingham, Washington’s Wild Buffalo House of Music on Thursday, Nov. 14. Grisman’s band at the time played the Wild Buffalo in January 2023 (Parklife DC was there) on their first-ever national tour. His return confirms Bellingham’s affection for Grateful Dead-inspired music, particularly after a year in which we saw bands like Dark Star Orchestra, Grateful Shred with Mikaela Davis, and Circles Around the Sun come through town.

After nearly two years on the road, Sam Grisman Project’s return (as we wrote in January 2023) means “[spending] 3 hours under the spell of dawg music, that fragrant, holistic brew of bluegrass, gypsy jazz, rock and roll, and countless global influences.” Sam himself tells the story:

“The music that my father David Grisman and his close friend, Jerry Garcia, made in the early 90s (in the house that I grew up in) is not only some of the most timeless acoustic music ever recorded, it also triggers my oldest and fondest musical memories. What I find most inspiring about this material is the way their camaraderie and their love and joy for the music, simply oozes out of each recording. It is also impressive how deeply they get beneath their favorite songs — whether they are originals, covers or traditional/old time tunes—and how expertly that material was curated.”

Watch Sam Grisman Project perform a set including “Shady Grove” and “Mississippi Half-Step” at The Hamilton Live in DC via YouTube:

Sam added: “My goal in starting Sam Grisman Project is to build a platform for my friends and me to showcase our genuine passion and appreciation for the legacy of Dawg and Jerry’s music. By playing some of their beloved repertoire and sharing the original music that our own collective has to offer, we will also show the impact that this music has had on our own individual musical voices. Ultimately, there is nothing that makes me happier than playing great songs with my best friends and my hope is to share that happiness with audiences all over!”

On this leg of the tour, Sam is joined by Chris J English (percussion, vocals), Logan Ledger (guitar, vocals), Max Flansburg (guitar, vocals), Victor Furtado (clawhammer banjo, vocals), and John Mailander (fiddle).
