In the mid-2000s, Swedish electronica band Teddybears had been kicking around a bit when they got swept along in the New Rave sound emanating from England. They dusted off a song they previously reported, titled “Punkrocker,” and enlisted perhaps the biggest punk rocker of all time to give it new life with fresh vocals.

Oh, that punk rocker was none other than Iggy Pop, who surfaced the song in live performances for the first time this summer, inspired by its inclusion by James Gunn in the soundtrack for the 2025 Superman film.

Maybe we in DC can hear Iggy sing the song as well? Because he’s performing live at The Anthem on Monday, Sept. 29!

Iggy Pop puts on a great show. He’s wild and free and full of grit. But he generally sticks to long established classics from The Stooges catalog and from his early solo career in his large concert performances. And so, the inclusion of “Punkrocker” by Teddybears in Iggy Pop in his concert setlist is a remarkable thing indeed.

Iggy Pop, born James Osterberg, launched his career as frontman of The Stooges, the incendiary proto-punk band whose late-’60s and early-’70s albums like Fun House and Raw Power laid the groundwork for punk rock.

Known for his feral stage presence and primal vocals, Pop went solo in the mid-’70s, collaborating with David Bowie on the influential albums The Idiot and Lust for Life. Over the decades, he has experimented with punk, rock, electronic, and jazz styles while earning acclaim as the “Godfather of Punk.” He remains a restless creative force, releasing his reflective, genre-blending solo album Every Loser in 2023.
