Kicking off a 10-day forecast of heavy showers were the flooded bathrooms of Merriweather Post Pavilion. Those with the foresight to don clear ponchos were shielded from the torrential downpour, but an awfully large portion of the crowd was drenched. Still, everyone persevered, because the promise of Weird Al Yankovic’s Bigger & Weirder Tour was too good to pass up. After decades of helping bring parody music into the mainstream, the show offered a much-needed blast from the past.
The throwback began with Puddles Pity Party. A seven-foot-tall clown towering over the crowd is not the usual opener, but in this case, it was a fitting one. The contrasting mix of bellowing vocals, strange and depressing graphics playing on the big screen, and energized covers left the crowd in awe of the onstage force that is Puddles — an especially appropriate name given how damp the lawn had become.
His stage presence shouldn’t be underappreciated, whether he was bringing a kid onstage to fake-strum along or running through the crowd and interacting with any poor soul he encountered in the front row. Covers of songs by Ozzy Osbourne, Queen and Tom Waits, mixed with original material, grounded the strange visuals in familiar, beloved music that had much of the crowd singing along. With such big shoes to fill, the giant clown was an excellent choice for the task.
Weird Al’s entrance was the perfect storm to set the tone for what was to come. Walking through the halls of Merriweather, he joked with staff, stole a slice of pizza and pied Puddles on his way to the stage. His set was packed with throwbacks and fan service, greeted with a flurry of applause at every turn.

One early highlight came when a stagehand brought out his accordion and Weird Al asked if everyone was ready for some polka. Even his interludes became part of the show. He would begin speaking in a tired, extremely deep deadpan before suddenly erupting into a climactic yell. Then, boom: A new song was underway.
It was shocking just how much energy the 66-year-old comedian had left in the tank throughout the set, running around the stage and throwing high kicks like the ageless wonder he truly is.
During one intermission, everyone left the stage for a high-production video featuring A-list celebrities including Jack Black and Daniel Radcliffe — who, fittingly enough, played Weird Al in the 2022 biopic “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.” The video offered parodies within parodies, showing just how much “pre-show work” had supposedly gone into preparing for the concert.
Another highlight came when Weird Al ventured into the crowd accompanied by a very talented cameraman. The footage projected onto the big screen was remarkably cinematic, thanks to some expert camera work.
But perhaps most impressive was how often Weird Al changed attire. Between nearly every song, something was different, and during some numbers, he even managed another costume change. Each song seemed to have its own preplanned look that went well beyond swapping shirts. Wigs, glasses, pants, robes — you name it, he probably wore it at least once.
The show came to a close with classics including “White & Nerdy,” “eBay,” and the fan favorite “Amish Paradise,” all greeted with vigorous clamor. Whatever you think of Weird Al, it’s hard to deny the staying power of those songs. In many ways, his absurdist pop-culture parodies anticipated the internet’s sense of humor — memes before memes.

More than 40 years into his career, Weird Al still knows how to put on a show that feels every bit as entertaining as it is ridiculous. Rain or shine, the Bigger & Weirder Tour proved that some acts never get old.
