Some artists just seem custom-built to play certain venues. If his batshit-delightful appearance there last week was any indication, Jeff Rosenstock is most certainly a perfect match for Baltimore’s Ottobar.
The Long Island-born musician and songwriter brought his five-piece band to the storied North Howard Street establishment last Monday night for one of two additional shows added to the summer tour he recently closed out.
A mission dubbed Death Rosenstock, it began in May with shows on the West Coast, and it wrapped up this past weekend atop the Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City. But jammed into the last week of it was a Sept. 14 stop in the Charm City that turned out to be an absolute riot for everyone involved.
Plucking songs from across his colorful catalogue of punk and ska or tunes blending or expanding variations of either, Rosenstock and his mates energized and delighted a sold-out audience that sweat and screamed for the duration of the entire set.

Like he does at his shows, Jeff acknowledged in Baltimore that his fans would ultimately let loose, as they always do. But he implored from the mic that any form of improper behavior, any indecency, would not be tolerated by him or anyone in the joint — an important welcoming at his gigs and a reflection of the forward-thinking person he is.
But by the time he made his way through “USA” from 2019’s Thanks, Sorry! And “Scram!” from 2020’s NO DREAM, his creativity and his hijinks were on full display. And by that point, bodies were lengthwise on top of the crowd — some ticketholders were even diving off the stage itself to be carried one way or another.
It was indeed a little warmer than usual in the multi-story hangout, and the beads just poured off the bandleader as he’d switch electric guitars or play the small Korg microSAMPLER to his right. Rosenstock fueled the remarkably powerful set, appearing more comfortable and more drenched as he went. An artistic visionary and a musical go-getter, he squeezed the life juice out of every song with determination, gusto, and his psychopathic grip.
“DOUBT,” a single from his 2023 album, Hellmode, was a reminder that he really does have a superb voice to accompany his instrumental talents.
Wearing a Suicidal Tendencies cap pulled down low for much of the show, he eventually flung it to the side before hanging from the Ottobar stage’s oddly placed support column and leaning over the crowd with the mic. He’d return to that spot, sitting on the stage ledge and hollering from the bottom of his lungs as a bright camera flash illuminated him and captured the moment.
He was joined by longtime associates John DeDomenici on bass, Mike Huguenor on guitar, Kevin Higuchi on drums and Dan Potthast on keys, acoustic and whatnot. This crew’s routinely blown the doors off some of the DMV’s most beloved venues, and last Monday night at Ottobar, they sweat their asses off right along with the crowd, making sure the whole thing was more than worth it.
