In what is sure to be a highlight of the musical calendar, three-time Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams brings her Don’t Tell Anybody The Secrets Tour to the Lincoln Theater in DC on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
Borrowing its title from her acclaimed memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You (which itself is named for a lyric in her song “Metal Firecracker”), this tour features the stories behind the songs that have made her one of the most respected and influential writers in contemporary music.
A true rock ‘n’ roll survivor, Williams is never lacking for stories from the incredible life she’s lived. The daughter of poet Miller Williams, she grew up all over the South, steeped in its literary and musical traditions, and even spent time in Mexico City. Her career, which began in the ’70s, has led her to Texas, Los Angeles, and Nashville.

Lucinda opened for Tom Petty in his last show before his passing. And speaking of Petty, he’s just one of the many artists who’ve covered her songs, along with Mary Chapin Carpenter and Patty Loveless. Her music is a foundational piece of what has become Americana, and she’s influenced a whole generation of musicians, including Neko Case, Jenny Lewis, and Gillian Welch. Her 1998 album, Car Wheels on A Gravel Road, appears on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Best Albums Ever Made as well as NPR’s list of the best albums made by women.
For any fan of great songwriting or anyone with an interest in the history and culture of the American South, this is sure to be a memorable evening and is a can’t-miss event.
