Alt-pop band The Driver Era have just released their brand new single “Malibu,” the second single from their upcoming third album! And the gents are on tour with a DC-area show at The Fillmore Silver Spring on Friday, Aug. 5!
Laced in escapism, brothers Rocky and Ross Lynch wrote “Malibu” while daydreaming about personal experiences. “‘Malibu’ is about reminiscing on experiences in the best locations,” the band stated. “It’s about getting away. It’s the spontaneous trip you take with someone — maybe you knew them before, or maybe you’re meeting them for the first time.”

“Malibu” follows the band’s first single of 2022, the dance-inspired “Keep Moving Forward” feat. Nikka Costa, which was featured earlier this month on Rolling Stone. The two singles will be featured on the band’s Summer Mixtape, due to be released late summer.
For The Driver Era, music can’t — and shouldn’t — be forced. The band, formed by brothers Ross and Rocky Lynch in 2018 while on tour with their former group R5, aims to embrace the present moment, creating songs that reflect each experience and feeling as it comes. It’s a philosophy that pervades all of the duo’s releases, from their debut single “Preacher Man” to their 2019 album X to their 2021 sophomore album, Girlfriend. The music showcases a variety of influences, like INXS, Bruce Springsteen and Prince, and the album features a diverse array of styles, notably pulling on the musicians’ love of hip-hop producers like Pharrell and will.i.am. It’s an album connected by its creators, rather than an overall theme, and it contains only a handful of the massive amount of songs the pair has written recently.
