Influential English rockers The Smiths released “Hand in Glove,” the band’s debut single, 40 years ago! The Smiths had a profound impact on music at many levels, and chief among those wave-making vibes were the witty and occasionally acerbic lyrical power of frontman Morrissey.
Morrissey, of course, has maintained a storied solo career since 1988, and the Mancunian singer-songwriter celebrates his 40 years in music with a performance at The Anthem in DC on Wednesday, Oct. 18.
Each night on this tour will highlight the fan-favorite songs that made you cry and the songs that saved your life, spanning from the early days of The Smiths through to today. Morrissey has released 13 solo studio albums, achieved a string of No.1 records, and been presented with an Ivor Nostello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.
As lead singer of The Smiths, Morrissey marked forever the history of music with only four albums. As a soloist, he has consolidated a sound that still reverberates today with his forthcoming album Without Music The World Dies, an explicit declaration of love for music, which has made him one of the most acclaimed voices of the last four decades.
When the debut single from The Smiths, “Hand In Glove,” first emerged 40 years ago, the musical landscape was forever changed and launched a rich catalogue of songs that includes anthems such as “This Charming Man,” “How Soon Is Now?,” “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out,” “Suedehead,” “Everyday Is Like Sunday,” “Irish Blood, English Heart,” “First of the Gang to Die,” and many many more.

Morrissey, once voted the second-greatest living British cultural icon (behind David Attenborough and before Paul McCartney), tours prior to the release of his next album, Without Music the World Dies.
Moz has an unreleased album, Bonfire of Teenagers, being held by Capitol Records. His last released LP was 2020’s I Am Not a Dog on a Chain — his 13th full-length studio album as a solo artist.
