Few bands can thrive on a songwriting process steeped in tomfoolery, but even fewer are getting the kicks Cheekface is getting these days.

The LA-born indie rock band is one of the uncommon groups to employ talk-singing, and, with four albums to its name and now touring as a four-piece outfit, Cheekface is showing itself to be a master of its playful craft.

With rapid-fire drivel made of hyper-bland observations and ponderings on the current American existence, Cheekface is also proving to be a hilarious host of its entertaining live performances, one of which recently occurred at The Atlantis in DC.

Craig David ended the North American leg of his 7 Days Commitment Tour recently at the Warner Theater in DC. David announced it had been over 20 years since he performed in the Nation’s Capital. Fans of the UK sensation filled the theater expecting to be drifted into 2000’s nostalgia and that expectation was surely met!

Live Review: Baroness w/ Red Fang @ Rams Head Live — 5/15/24

Baroness

Baroness, the four-piece that formed in Savannah, Georgia, but now reside in Philadelphia and New York, plays a type of metal that’s heavy. But even those who swear they aren’t fans of the genre come away with an appreciation — if not love — for the music of Baroness. Whether it’s the harmonies (both of the vocal and guitar variety) of John Baizley and Gina Gleason; the complex rhythms of drummer Sebastian Thomson and bassist Nick Jost; or the emotional power that such loud, distortion-laden songs emit, Baroness is a band that’s hard to ignore, as seen recently at Rams Head Live.

Baroness’s trajectory hasn’t been a straight line. And maybe that informs a lot of the emotional energy the band displays in both the six full-length LPs they’ve produced as well as their frenetic live shows. Formed in 2003, the band went through a live-changing accident while on tour in the UK and some line-up changes before their fourth album, Purple. In that period, Baizley moved from Georgia to Philly, where he met Gleason, who had been playing guitar as part of the Cirque du Soleil cast.

Live Review: Neil Young @ Jiffy Lube Live — 5/11/24

Over the course his celebrated, sixty-or-so year career, Neil Young has taken his share of left turns that have frustrated fans and business associates alike. In the ’80s, his label, Geffen Records, sued for him making records, like the electronic music exploration Trans, that were not “characteristic.”

But at Jiffy Lube Live on a recent show for the Love Earth tour, Young gave the audience exactly what they wanted, playing nearly all of his most popular songs, digging in not only to his material with Crazy Horse, but also to his solo albums and his work as a member of Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

If you only had the chance to see the iconic Rock & Roll Hall of Famer once in your life, this was the show you’d want to see.

By now you probably know the story. Dijon and Omar Apollo collaborator. USC Thornton School of Music dropout. ’80s pop-rock regen and guitar god Mk.gee has been selling out shows following the release of his trendsetting record Two Star & the Dream Police.

I love Kurt Vile’s music because it’s chill and relaxes me whenever I need to take it down a notch or two. His hazy melodies and stream of consciousness lyrics keep me engaged and his overall slacker vibe appeals to my Gen X sensibilities.

For some reason, Vile did not bring his Back to Moon Beach tour to DC, instead hitting the Ottobar in Baltimore back in March and ending the tour with a show last weekend at The National in Richmond. It seemed like a great excuse for a weekend roadtrip.

But on Thursday, May 23, Moody will play her own music at The Birchmere, accompanied by respected Nashville instrumentalists Sam Howard on upright bass and Anthony da Costa on guitar, both of whom have recently played with bluegrass sensation Molly Tuttle. Ruth is touring behind her first solo outing in a decade, Wanderer, out May 17 on True North Records.

“We tend to come back to the original ways,” Ann Wilson, lead singer of Heart, recently told the massive crowd at the CFG Bank Arena.

I think in a lot of ways that’s the story of Heart. It’s one that began in the early 1970s and changed and moved, but in the end came back to the core of what this iconic band has always been at its, well, heart. Heart is the embodiment of the musical partnership between Ann and Nancy Wilson.

Live Review: Katie Pruitt w/ Jack Van Cleaf @ The Atlantis — 5/12/24

Something Katie Pruitt recently said at The Atlantis came back to me after the show. Introducing her second song of the evening, “Normal,” they told the audience, “is about feeling like an outcast, and discovering that the things that made you different are actually fucking awesome.”

In a conversation with my mom the next day, she described our late cousin Ludwig as “a strange guy.” “Mom,” I replied, “everyone in our family is weird.” “That’s what makes us special,” she said.

Dirty Honey always knows how to bring down the house, and their recent concert at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, Virginia, was no exception.
