Livestreaming be damned, an artist can’t feasibly bring a crowd into their own living room. But they can most certainly create a comparable atmosphere in a venue setting.

As musicians have come to increasingly appreciate the intimate engagement, the past few years have seen several high-profile names perform from the cozy confines of a couch or an armchair.

Band of Horses billed the shows on the group’s current tour as two-set affairs: one acoustic, one electric. As a favorite rock band for so many over the past two decades, the Seattle-born group likely would have packed any Baltimore venue this past weekend.

DC9, one of DC’s best small independent venues, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a series of intimate concerts with big-name artists.

As part of that series on Saturday, singer, songwriter, and guitarist Margaret Glaspy took the stage to deliver new songs from her beautiful 2023 record, Echo the Diamond. Backed by an airtight three piece band, she cemented her status as one of the most consistent and underrated performers in indie rock today.

Mojo Nixon has left us. He has shed his mortal coil and slipped away to become one with the Parliament of Weird Uncles. Somewhere, Don Henley is having a good laugh.

Now a lot of obituaries have appeared for this one-of-a-kind, 100% all-American weirdo, a true neurodivergent king, if ever there was one. If you want the basic facts of the Mojo story, you can go look those up, because that’s not what you’re going to get here. No, sir, this is a different kind of tribute to Mojo, and one I hope that crazy son of a bitch would’ve appreciated.

Renowned R&B artist Tinashe recently sold out the 9:30 Club for her BB Ang3l tour. From the beginning, you could tell this was gearing up to be a great night just from how eager fans were to enter as they waited in a line that wrapped around the block. Seeing their smiling faces only added to the energy. There was this amazing sense of camaraderie in the air, and I watched strangers become fast friends as they bonded over their mutual love for Tinashe.

A year ago, I saw Sarah Jarosz in concert at the Warner Theater with Shawn Colvin and Marc Cohn. That show prefigured the evolution in Jarosz’s music that recently was on display at a sold-out Historic Synagogue at Sixth & I, on the first night of her Polaroid Lovers tour, so named for her most recent album, which she released last month.

GRAMMY Award-nominated, Billboard-topping rockers The Record Company (TRC) are on a tour to support their fourth full-length release, The 4th Album (Round Hill Records 2023). The band dropped by 9:30 Club recently for their Roll With It Tour, and Steve Satzberg photographed the show!

Live Review: G. Love & Special Sauce w/ Jakob’s Castle @ Rams Head on Stage — 2/1/24 + @ The Hamilton Live — 2/3/24

“We don’t get to play these deep cuts often,” G. Love recently told a sold-out audience at The Hamilton, which was part of the 30th anniversary tour for his 1994 debut album, G. Love & Special Sauce. Over the course of the evening, the band played the record, which nearly went gold and remains their most popular, in its entirety.

G. Love & Special Sauce plays an interesting and saucy — you can’t expect me not to grab that pun — musical style. It’s rap, but it’s quite distinct from most rap. It’s uncommon to see a rapper strumming an acoustic guitar, and G. Love is the only rapper I can think of who plays the harmonica. (I qualify this statement as my knowledge of rap and hip hop is limited, and it’s possible there’s someone I’m not aware of.) As their second song of the evening celebrates, “Blues Music” is an integral part of what they do, and it’s drawn them a fan base of crossover listeners who might not be primarily fans of rap.

Live Review: Mick Jenkins @ Howard Theatre — 1/28/24

Soundcloud was a savior for many high schoolers before the streaming boom. Through my friends’ playlists and lots of buffering, I heard some of my favorite rappers for the first time, and from 2014-2016, Chill-hop, conscious rap, and trap began to blend in beautiful ways.

I was hit with one wave of this nostalgia recently as Isaiah Rashad celebrated the 10-year anniversary of his Cilvia Demo with a live Spotify performance. I was hit with an even heavier wave of nostalgia as I began digging back through Mick Jenkins’s discography and floated through The Water(s) in preparation for his recent performance at the Howard Theatre.

Ben Bridwell’s Band of Horses recently made a stop at The Fillmore Silver Spring for the second show of their An Evening with Band of Horses Tour. The evening consisted of a 10-song acoustic set followed by a 10-song electric set.
