DC has its own abundance of remarkable musicians who seem to lead double lives — working what might be considered “normal” or “real” jobs and then practicing, recording, or performing somewhere in between.

But there might be only one man who for decades grinded away in blue-collar fashion and kept a low profile while being celebrated for helping shape the songs and sounds of his homeland.

Acclaimed keyboardist Hailu Mergia drove a cab at and around Dulles Airport for years. But prior to that in Ethiopia, he’d been an essential member of the Walias Band, a jazz and funk operation that thrived at a pivotal time for the country’s music despite a government heavy on censorship and restriction.

Poll: Who Is the Best Local Band in DC for 2023?

Wood Thrush

Welcome to the 2023 Thrushie Awards! Parklife DC will name the best local band of the year with your input. Parklife DC will honor DC bands and venues with our annual Thrushie Awards program, named for our mascot, DC’s own state bird — the Wood Thrush.

A best local DC band must perform in the continuum of indie rock clubs that we cover around the metro area, and they must have released new music in the past year.

As always, our Thrushie Awards are inspired by our mission to review live music concerts and spotlight bands and concert halls covered by Parklife DC. Voting for Thrushies runs through Friday, Dec. 15, at midnight, and you get to vote for your favorite DC band.

Write-in candidates are welcome.

The year is 2013, and I’m in my dorm’s computer lab around midnight repeatedly refreshing the Datpiff home page and scouring my favorite Hip-Hop blogs waiting for the Flatbush Zombies newest mixtape “BetterOffDead” to drop. Jump to 2023, and the Brooklyn trio packed out the Fillmore Silver Spring last week, as a part of a small eight-show tour in some of their favorite cities in celebration of the mixtape turned album’s 10th anniversary.

Accompanied by AK the Savior (1/2 of the Underachievers), A$AP Ant, and a special guest appearance from the DMV’s own Azizi Gibson as openers, The Zombies — Erick the Architect, Meechy Darko, and Zombie Juice — performed all of BetterOffDead’s biggest tracks as well as few of their more recent solo records as they’ve all released solo projects this year.

“Aaaalright, Baltimore! You wanted the best. You got the best. The hottest band in the world… KISS”

Amidst exploding pyrotechnics, Paul Stanley sang the opening lines to “Detroit Rock City,” I feel uptight on a Saturday night / Nine o’clock, the radio’s the only light / I hear my song and it pulls me through / Comes on strong, tells me what I got to do — and a more perfect opening to a rock show there never was.

Taking the stage at The Anthem recently to introduce her song “Never Said,” Liz Phair eloquently and poignantly told the packed music venue exactly why she was there to celebrate the 30th anniversary of her seminal album Exile in Guyville.

“You know, I was thinking about a lot of things when I got back into this album,” Liz told the crowd at The Anthem. “I really dug down into my past. And I thought about how hard you have to fight when you’re young to make your dreams come true.”

“And you struggle in darkness and in uncertainty and rejection. You go out every night to make yourself feel better and do crazy shit, looking for love. You live and die by the social scene. All you really got at that point is each other. Then, you move beyond it, and you find acceptance and security and everything you wanted, and you realize once you get there that the earlier time was a magical place and a liminal space between youth and adulthood. And some of the best times of your life.”

The inaugural Darker Waves Festival in sunny Orange County, California, was a helluva lot of fun last month! About 38,000 people packed into a tight space on the state beach in Huntington Beach city for roughly 10 hours of amazing music by 33 bands.

Headliners New Order and Tears for Fears (whose sets did not overlap) were the big draw. Parklife friend Ben Eisendrath took photos of a few other favorites throughout the day, providing us with an opportunity to talk about some of the strengths of a festival like Darker Waves. (Mickey McCarter has provided a few words about the festival around these photos.)
