I have been a fan of SZA since I first discovered her in 2012 at the Enter the Void Tour, where she was the opening act for Jhene Aiko. At the time, I didn’t know much about her, but after doing some research, I was instantly hooked on her music. What struck me the most was how relatable her songs were, especially since we are the same age. Her music always seemed to come at the perfect time in my life.

In 2018 SZA headlined her own tour for her album CTRL, which felt like a musical diary for all of us 20s something. Now, the opportunity to see her first-ever arena tour following the massive success of her third album SOS was truly an amazing experience. It has been a joy to witness her career blossom throughout the years, and this tour is a testament to her talent and hard work, as soon recently at CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore.

Three albums into her career, Margaret Glaspy is starting to have her moment. While her first two records, Emotions and Math (2016) and Devotion (2020) received strong reviews, her timing with the latter could not have been worse: Devotion was released in March of 2020, and Glaspy was never able to tour behind it due to the pandemic.

With this year’s Echo the Diamond, Margaret has gotten the strongest press of her career and, she recently kicked off a tour behind the album at Union Stage in DC.

With all the pomp and circumstance celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, it’s a great time for the Wu-Tang Clan and Nas, two titans of the genre, to join together for a co-headlining tour showcasing some of the best albums and tracks from the ’90s and beyond, which they did recently at Capital One Arena.

Live Review: Cold Cave @ Black Cat — 9/23/23

Over the past decade, Wesley Eisold, renowned among fans of synthpop for his dark wave project Cold Cave, has preferred to release music in small EP bursts rather than in full-length albums.

Most recently, Wes published Fate in Seven Lessons via his own Heartworm Press. The seven tracks of the record, released in 2021, represent the single biggest slice of music that he’s released in sometime, and he presented two of the songs in concert recently at Black Cat on his most recent tour, opening with “Prayer from Nowhere” and closing the main set with “Promised Land” from the album.

The Annapolis Songwriters Festival is modeled after the hugely successful Key West Songwriters Festival, which continues to be the largest festival of its kind in the world. Highlighting the specialized craft that is the essence of music, this festival aims to give music lovers a chance to get to know the names and faces behind the songs in an up-close and personal setting.

The second annual Annapolis Songwriters Festival took place Sept. 14-17, 2023, throughout Downtown Annapolis. Blondie and Leann Rimes headlined the festival at the City Dock stage located in Downtown Annapolis at Susan Campbell Park. Other venues included Rams Head On Stage, Watermark Cruises, and Maryland Hall. Free events took place in bars and restaurants throughout Downtown Annapolis along Songwriters Trail from Metropolitan Kitchen & Lounge to City Dock.

Steve Satzberg traveled the festival to capture 50 photos of artists in performance.

Live Review: Frankie Cosmos w/ Good Morning @ 9:30 Club — 9/22/23

Greta Simone Kline, known on stage as Frankie Cosmos, recently kicked off her 2023 fall tour in DC with support from the band Good Morning. She played new tracks off of her most recent release, Inner World Peace, and brought her unique indie-pop sound barely above a whisper to the 9:30 Club.

Currently, her band members consist of Luke Pyenson on drums and backup vocals, Alex Bailey on bass guitar and keys, and Lauren Martin on keys, synthesizers, and harmonies. It was this group of musicians’ first tour on stage together — and they definitely delivered to a packed venue.

Lil Yachty loaded up the bus and recently kicked off his worldwide The Field Trip Tour in DC at a sold-out Echostage in support of his most recent album, Let’s Start Here. After stating he wanted to be viewed at an artist, not just a rapper earlier this year, Boat released the alternative/psychedelic rock project that was a major left turn from all of Yachty’s previous work, reminiscent of Kid Cudi’s WZRD phase for a blog-era kid like myself.

The Turnpike Troubadours w/ Lucero and Reckless Kelly @ The Anthem — 9/23/23

Late in their recent set at The Anthem, red dirt band Turnpike Troubadours paid tribute to the late Charlie Robison by covering his song “My Hometown.”

Robison, who passed away earlier this month at 59, came from a musical family: His brother, Bruce, is also a singer-songwriter. Charlie embodied the renegade spirit of the scene that gave birth to the Oklahoma-based Troubadours; Charlie didn’t pull any punches, and he wasn’t afraid to criticize anyone. Sometimes, this resulted in statements that pushed the limits of people’s comfort, but, as a recent article reminded me, he stood up for the right things, like calling out the music industry for giving a star who committed domestic violence a free pass.

Live Review: Melvins @ Howard Theater – 9/22/23

If you have never seen the Melvins perform live, there is really only one way to describe the show: Oh My Lord!

The Melvins recently played the elegant Howard Theater in DC, and it is the probable cause of any future foundation issues that the historic building might have. If it wasn’t the loudest show I’ve ever been to, it’s in the top three. This is one powerful band. And there’s only three of them!
