When James McMurty recently introduced his song “Levelland” (“one of the Robert Earl Keen songs I wrote”) at The Birchmere, he explained that he’d taken some poetic license in the titular setting. (Levelland is a small town in a Texas west of Lubbock.) The song was inspired by Max Crawford, a novelist who lived in another small West Texas town, Floydada. He joked that Crawford is the best novelist to ever come from Floydada, and likely the only one.

Max, he said, shot himself in the foot by “trying to be a true artist, which is always a mistake.” He wanted to title his first novel The Penis of Jesus, and the publisher wouldn’t issue it as such; later it came out as Backslider, which James praised as excellent novel. He would know: his late father was Larry McMurtry, one of the most celebrated writers of the last 60 years.

Finding the right balance of consistency and new direction is likely an ongoing challenge for any band, especially for those that succeed for not just a few years but across decades.

Yet for almost 30 years and across 10 studio albums, Spoon has honed its sound to thrilling and gratifying effect, creating fresh material and choosing lesser-known covers to bring out the best and most distinct features of the band while artfully strutting along an alluring and familiar path.

The Austin-born outfit paid an extended visit to the nation’s capital last week, kicking it off Wednesday evening with a sold-out show at The Atlantis before delivering back-to-back performances around the corner at 9:30 Club on Thursday and Friday night.

Pennsylvania dreampoppers The Ocean Blue opened their recent DC show at the Howard Theatre with the wistfully nostalgic “Denmark,” a beautifully soothing tune that calms the spirit and delivers feeling.

The song and others from the band’s 1999 album Davy Jones’ Locker served as the focus of the show in the wake of a remastering and fresh release for the album. A fan-favorite delight that continued the atmospheric sounds of the ’80s well into the next decade, The Ocean Blue were smart to revisit these sentimental tunes

Duran Duran were very pleased to have arrived in DC for their recent performance at Capital One Arena.

“We are driving around today, and we passed this block, and I knew where we were!” Duran Duran frontman Simon LeBon told the audience. “We played our first show in Washington, DC, at a little club called The Bayou! It’s not there anymore. It’s a bummer. That was an amazing place!”

Simon recalled really enjoying the Georgetown club, telling the audience, “I thought I was Judy Garland on stage on Broadway.”

He shared the memory as one of many amazing nights the band have experienced in DC, and sure enough they added another incredible evening to the list at Capital One Arena on Sept. 13.

It’s not too often you find a co-headlining bill led by all-female vocalists. Co-headliners MisterWives and Bishop Briggs played energetic sets following their opener, Raffaella, at The Anthem recently on their shared show, part of The Don’t Look Down Tour.

The year may not be over yet, but it’s no secret MisterWives has had a busy one. Following the departure of former member Jesse Blum and record label Fueled By Ramen dropping them in 2021, they released their album, Nosebleeds, as a group of five under their own banner, Resilient Little Records.

Ben Sloan, who recently opened for Beth Orton at The Birchmere and played drums in her band, admitted to some trepidation when he took the stage. The Birchmere, he said, is “an intimidating place to perform weird electronic music,” in part because it’s so nice.

When two major artists team up to create music and embark on a tour to bring it to their collective fan bases, it’s unquestionably going to draw large numbers of listeners to take in the occasion.

A massive crowd turned out this past weekend to take in the monstrous double-headliner of Beck and Phoenix, two forces joined over the past year to release what’s become a well-received single — “Odyssey” — just before kicking off a tour that started on the West Coast and wrapped up this past weekend at Merriweather Post Pavilion.
