“Thank you so much for being up for this,” Lauren Mayberry told her audience at 9:30 Club during her first-ever public solo performance on Monday.

Lauren compared the experience of her debut solo concert to a throwback indie rock night out when perhaps the audience didn’t fully know what they were going to hear at a show in the days before the widespread adoption of the internet by the music industry.

And yet, totally beguiled by the CHVRCHES frontwoman, the audience were along for the ride and thus for a set of really good new songs.

The niche role-playing game Burning Wheel characterizes persuasion as the art of convincing someone else that what you want is to their benefit.

And that’s exactly what Sting did when he came out for his encore at Wolf Trap recently and asked the audience what they wanted to hear, and they cried out for The Police’s first big hit, “Roxanne.”

Surprise projects tend to be welcomed with open arms by music listeners and concert goers who enjoy hearing and hopefully even seeing their favorite artists playing varied music in different settings.

William Tyler is a widely respected, seasoned guitar guru in addition to being a well-connected producer, writer, and thought leader, and it seems that any time he records lately, the nature of the music or the project is unique compared to the previous effort.

In early 2021, he and a cohort of pals traveled down to a brewery in Huntsville, Alabama, where they recorded a live performance as William Tyler and the Impossible Truth, cooking up an illusory, kaleidoscopic take on seven tracks — mostly William’s originals, plus one Kraftwerk interpretation — that would eventually be released as the Secret Stratosphere double LP early this year.
