The National Independent Venue Association held its second annual conference in DC last week, and as with many conferences, there were plenty of afterparties.

Given that DC is full of great venues, those afterparties also featured great DC bands, and arguably NIVA 2023 surely couldn’t have done better than to close with a party at the legendary Black Cat, featuring headliner Ex Hex, back on stage finally post-pandemic, and The Owners, the talented new band made up of club personnel.

The National Independent Venue Association gathered DC for it second annual conference, packing The Anthem, Union Stage, and Capital Turnaround with daylong programming for several days last week.

As with many conferences, there were sponsored parties at the end of the day, and NIVA took the opportunity on the second full day of the conference to spotlight DC bands in DC’s small venues. At DC9, conferees caught DC electronic solo project Sneaks and dreampop duo Glosser, injecting some cool local indie pop into the agenda.

This rapper, activist, and entrepreneur embodies the essence of Atlanta’s music scene, community spirit, and social consciousness, leaving an indelible mark on the city he calls home.

DC’s favorite mid-summer festival went down last weekend at the RFK Stadium Festival Grounds, and though the weather wasn’t in our favor, attendees still made the most of it.

Broccoli City Music Festival was first founded in DC in 2013 and though it’s been held at a few different venues throughout the years, it has stayed local since its creation. This year, however, a stacked lineup brought roughly 30,000 attendees out and into the July heat to catch some of their favorite hip-hop and R&B artists. This year’s scheduled headliners consisted of Lil Uzi Vert, Jazmine Sullivan, and Brent Faiyaz. Other artists included Ice Spice, Rema, City Girls, Kodak Black, Mariah the Scientists, and more.

Live Review: The Struts @ 9:30 Club — 7/16/23

There are some bands or performers that have a special magic. It’s something that can transform a bad day into one of the best nights you’ll have after just a few minutes.  The Struts, led by charismatic singer Luke Spiller, have an uncanny ability to tap into that chemical process making it hard not to have a good time when they hit the stage.

Unabashed rockstars, The Struts pull from the pantheon of great rock architects like Queen and the Rolling Stones. But this isn’t a copy. The UK band have a style all their own with hook-laden songs that are hard to get out of your head. The Struts released their most recent album, Strange Days, in 2020 — and a handful of singles has teased the arrival of their next full-length record. This was a harbinger to a great time at 9:30 Club for a recent sold-out show.

Most folks know Louise Post as half of ’90s alt-rock band Veruca Salt, and she has now released a solo record, Sleepwalker, and launched a tour in support of her new material. That tour landed at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City recently, and Ben Eisendrath was there to photograph the show.

In 2020, independent arts and entertainment venues organized and advocated for financial assistance in the face of a COVID pandemic that shut down institutions and threatened to drive them out of business. Federal advocacy spearheaded by the National Independent Venues Association resulted in a $15 billion fund for the resulting Save Our Stages Act.

This federal grant program was the “largest investment in arts and culture in the history of the world,” as characterized by Music Policy Forum’s Michael Brady during a panel of the NIVA 2023 convention at Union Stage in Washington, DC, last week.

Live Review: First Aid Kit w/ The Weather Station @ The Anthem — 7/14/23

“We tried to make a happy record after all the dark things that happened in the world,” said one of Soderbergh sisters, recently speaking of their latest album, Palomino, at The Anthem. ” But we failed,” she continued.

This is, perhaps, only partially true. First Aid Kit’s latest album, Palomino, expands their sound from its roots in country- and folk-rock to to  embrace a more lush, pop-oriented sound. First Aid Kit wear their influences on their sleeves. They are, as they said, “huge Gram Parsons nerds,” and their song, “Wild Horses II,” expresses their preference for the version of the song recorded by Parsons’s band, The Flying Burrito Brothers.

Noel Gallagher is in a bit of a weird spot with his solo career in the USA.  He just released his fourth studio album under his High Flying Birds moniker to universal acclaim in the UK, with most outlets declaring Council Skies his best post-Oasis work. He’s eager to make his mark as a forward-thinking solo artist, ceding most of the ample Oasis nostalgia circuit to his brother Liam.

However, here in the States, he’s mostly “the guy from Oasis” to casual music fans and when they see him live, they want to sing along to “Champagne Supernova” and “Wonderwall.” But on his current tour, Noel doesn’t seem interested in that.
