Caroline Rose put on one of the most exciting shows I’ve seen at the 9:30 Club in recent times — visually compelling with great drama and terrific songs. Though they were, as they emphasized, working with a small but dedicated crew, they all did an incredible job of staging a truly dynamic performance.

Lucius

Over the last several years Lucius, the duo of Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, has been a fixture on albums (and live shows) from artists that span genres. From John Legend to Brandi Carlile (co-producer on their most recent record), from John Prine to The War on Drugs — there’s this magic that seems to flow from them — and it has made them the go-to team for rich harmonies. But for even longer, Lucius has been writing and performing their own brilliant danceable pop songs — with their latest, last year’s Second Nature, their best yet.

As Jess told the crowd at their recent show for Rams Head Live! in Baltimore, she and Holly have been doing this for 18 years together, and in that time, they have really honed an impressive live show.

Since that last tour, he’s released two albums: last year’s The Midnight Broadcast, recorded before lockdown, and this year’s Doctor Moan, his first piano-driven album. His set covered material from his nearly 40-year solo career.

Prior to their recent capacity show at DC9, The Bobby Lees drummer Macky Bowman shuffled off his clothes before sitting down at his kit. Clad only in his underwear, he was a harbinger of things to come: This garage punk quartet were going to play loud and fast — and they were going to work up a sweat!
