Ken Kolodner and his son, Brad, want to do more than just celebrate and honor old-time music — they envision perpetuating and expanding the genre beyond any narrow preconceptions that might hinder its advancement. They see it thriving now and into the future as more modern artists continue to embrace the old-time sound or some version of it, reinterpreting and creating new songs to be added to the catalogue and handed down to the next generation.

In hosting the fourth edition of the Baltimore Old Time Music Festival at Creative Alliance this past weekend, the father-son duo successfully furthered its mission by welcoming an impressive list of outstanding musicians to the Charm City for not only memorable performances, but a busy slate of instructional workshops led by the artists themselves.

Betty Who always wanted to be a pop star — and the truth is that she was one the second she stepped on stage and sang in front of people. She possesses something that can’t be bought or learned — a true passion for performing. At her recent big DC show at The Anthem, she exuded such absolute uninhibited joy that it was impossible not to be drawn to her.

With the EP Built on Bones, Emily Scott Robinson told the audience at Jammin’ Java on Sunday evening, she, along with the duo Violet Bell and Alisa Amador wanted to “rewrite the history” surrounding the Witches in Shakespeare’s Macbeth to emphasize a tradition of “strong women and healers.” Written by Robinson and sung in three-part harmony, the record is a suite of six songs written for the Witches, created at the behest of Robinson’s partner, a theater director in Colorado.

Yeat

Tearing up The Anthem recently, Yeat brought indescribable energy to the sold-out venue. Decked out in balaclavas to match Yeat’s iconically masked look, groups of young concertgoers crowded the floor, forming mosh pits and dance circles before the artist even hit the stage. The energy in the audience was the craziest I’ve ever seen at The Anthem, and once Yeat hit the stage, I understood why.
