What’s the color of joy? Before last week, I may have said yellow. It took an Emotional Oranges concert to lean me in another direction. The LA-based R&B/pop duo comprised of Azad (A) and Vali (V) recently showed fans how orange feels during their performance at a sold-out 9:30 Club.

Were the Talking Heads a jam band?

Certainly, if you looked at them only from the start with “Psycho Killer” in 1977, you would be inclined to say no. But three years later, the band had changed significantly. Partly due to the input of keyboardist and guitarist Jerry Harrison, the band grew its sound significantly. Harrison and the rest of the band embraced a funkier, looser sound for their fantastic fourth studio album, Remain in Light.

Five of that groundbreaking record’s eight tracks were the stars of Jerry Harrison’s Talking Heads celebration, a show he’s taken on the road with guitarist Adrian Belew, who also played on the tracks and toured with the Talking Heads back in the day. Their recent sold-out show at Rams Head Live! in Baltimore burned down the house.

With a natural synergy, some bands can sound like they’ve been making music together for decades.

The Dip, an uplifting and superbly talented R&B group out of Seattle, hasn’t been together for quite 10 years yet, but somehow its already developed an aura, character, and pizazz that most bands can only hope to achieve in whatever time they might have together.

With three studio albums under its belt but boasting an irresistible sound and the promise of a good time, this charming outfit sold out 9:30 Club the night of Feb. 28 in what was an unforgettable showing in the nation’s capital and a sure indication that this is a band rapidly endearing new listeners with its winning recipe.

Some of the most captivating musicians seem to be on a journey that takes a lifetime.

Natalie Mering has been maneuvering her own emotional curiosity since she was a child and her parents — musicians and born-again Christians — might have indirectly encouraged her mind to wander in moving the family a couple times before settling just outside of Philly.

With her inherited penchant for renewal and her own itinerant spirit, Natalie would embark on a voyage from place to place, moving coast to coast more than once, evolving from a teenage songwriter to a member of various bands and ultimately into one of the most elegant and mesmerizing artists of today.
