On Thursday night, Wolf Trap hosted a couple of legendary figures in Emmylou Harris and Graham Nash, musicians whose long careers have done much to shape the musical landscape we live in today.

Harris took the stage first, and her set showed off her estimable skills as both an interpreter and writer of songs, and the stylistic diversity of her music. I could hardly have asked for a better set, as she hit on many of my favorites from her extensive catalog.

The self-proclaimed “best rapper alive,” Lil Wayne himself recently tore down Jiffy Lube Live as he kicked off his Tha Carter VI Tour: Celebrating 20+ Years of Carter Classics in support of his latest entry in his Tha Carter series, Tha Carter VI. The first official show was held at Madison Square Garden in early June, but the tour just resumed in Virginia last week. Wayne spent the night playing classic after classic from his more than 25-year career, as well as introducing us to his new generation of Young Money artists.

Nobody expected perfect weather for the recent Barenaked Ladies show at Wolf Trap, but the storms that rolled through Virginia that night were something else. At one point, the IMAX screens told people on the lawn to find shelter. But Wolf Trap crowds don’t give up that easily.

John Fogerty: Still Chooglin’ Through the Virginia Rain
By Mike Sprouse / Odd Rocker Photography

So, picture this: It’s Friday night in Doswell, Virginia. The rain picks up then fades off and on, just to make everyone soggy and slightly miserable. We’re wedged in behind Kings Dominion — within shouting distance of roller coasters — but none of that mattered. Because in the gravel lot-turned-venue at the Atlantic Union Bank After Hours stage, the guy who basically invented swamp rock was walking out in denim jacket and jeans like it was 1970 all over again.

And folks, John Fogerty came to play.

Live Review: Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs w/ Shannon McNally @ Warner Theatre — 7/29/25

One of the great regrets of my musical fandom is never seeing the late Tom Petty and his band, the Heartbreakers. His guitarist — Mike Campbell, who co-wrote many of his songs (as well as “The Boys of Summer” with Don Henley) — now leads his own band, The Dirty Knobs, who similarly play straightforward rock ‘n’ roll. (Campbell even sounds a bit like Petty, sharing his nasal singing delivery, which has been described as like Bob Dylan, but in key, and his north Florida accent.)

In their recent appearance at the Warner Theatre, Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs treated the audience to a night of originals peppered with a number of deep Petty cuts and classic covers.
