Jessie Reyez’s Paid in Memories Tour recently sold out back to back nights at The Fillmore Silver Spring in support of her latest album of the same name that dropped back in March. On my first time back at The Fillmore in nearly a year, I ended up catching a great show from an artist I didn’t know too much about. I’d heard the name Jessie Reyez for several years and liked the songs that I’d heard, but never really took a dive into her world until I watched her perform at Dreamville Festival in 2023. A great performance will almost always make a fan out of me and Jessie easily checked that box.

Baltimore Burns (Metaphorically)

It was that kind of Baltimore in July; getting hammered by a hard, heavy thunderstorm that made you question your life choices. But that didn’t stop the swarm of black-clad faithful from descending on CFG Bank Arena for the kickoff of Ghost’s Skeleta 2025 US tour.

On July 15, Americana supergroup I’m With Her plays at Wolf Trap, where they’ll share the bill with Iron & Wine on their shared Robin’s Egg Tour. It’s the second summer in a row fiddler, vocalist, and songwriter Sara Watkins headlines the venue, having appeared last year with Nickel Creek, the progressive bluegrass band she founded with her brother Sean, and Chris Thile.

In advance of I’m With Her’s performance at Wolf Trap, I spoke with Sara about the group’s latest project and their upcoming tour.

When I remember the 1980s (particularly the early ’80s), I always think of summertime. The radio dial delivered the soundtrack to those last days of school and trips to the beach. And at the top of the dial were songs like “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield or “Missing You” by John Waite. So, it’s more than a bit fitting that on a hot summer Sunday, Rick Springfield brought his I Want My ‘80s Tour to Wolf Trap along with 1980’s hitmakers John Waite, Wang Chung, and Paul Young.

As a tip of the hat to those enduring songs, the lines into Wolf Trap were long, but, fortunately, there were plenty of places to cool off while concertgoers made their way into the venue.

Rooters rockers Dispatch released Yellowjacket, their ninth studio album, in June via Bomber Records/AWAL Recordings. The dynamic duo of jam bands are on tour in support of the album, and they recently performed live at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap.

Although now a resident of Chicago, Piedmont blues and neotraditional country musician Dom Flemons maintains strong ties to the DC area, where he lived for several years. He recently returned to region for a show at Rams Head on Stage, where he was joined on the bill by Sunny War.

Summer officially kicked off in Baltimore recently as Keyshia Cole’s The Way It Is Tour touched down in Charm City. The tour marked the remarkable 20th anniversary of the songstress’ debut album. That album marked a shift in R&B culture as it blended heartbreak ballads and hip-hop culture. The nearly sold-out crowd came prepared for nostalgia as Cole promised not to disappoint.

The Roots recently brought their signature fusion of hip-hop, jazz, soul, and funk to The Filene Center at Wolf Trap, delivering a masterclass in live musicianship that proved why they remain one of the most compelling acts in modern music — nearly four decades after their formation.

Live Review: Samantha Fish @ Baltimore Soundstage — 6/29/25

A bluesy spell was cast in Baltimore

You ever walk into a place and just feel the voltage in the air?

I’m not talking static cling or nervous excitement here: I mean full-blown, skin-prickling, ribcage-thumping electricity. That kind of buzz that hits you before the lights even dim, before a single chord is struck, before the first “whoo!” ricochets off the walls.

That was the Baltimore Soundstage on Sunday night, June 29. A night pinned between a muggy Mid-Atlantic heatwave and the tail end of Pride weekend. The humidity was thick enough to bite through, but no one gave a damn — we were all packed shoulder to shoulder and already sweating bullets by the time Samantha Fish took the stage.

Live Review: Car Seat Headrest @ The Anthem — 6/28/25

Car Seat Headrest are back! And at their tour opener at The Anthem Saturday night, the band that started in Northern Virginia made their return to an enthusiastic sold-out crowd.

It’s an understatement to call the journey back from 2020’s Making a Door Less Open to their just released thirteenth album, The Scholars a roller coaster. The last time I saw Car Seat Headrest was also at The Anthem and right after things started opening back up after the start of Covid. After that show, Will Toledo – front person and creative lead – would be affected by and start on his long road through Long Covid and related health concerns. The result would lead eventually into a sort of conceptual record that took as much from lush 1970’s rock as it does from the sound of bands like The Talking Heads.
