On her debut album Till It’s All Forgotten, Farao sings the song “Bodies” in a haunting manner over layered instrumentation that sometimes sounds like a train gaining speed. Lyrically, the song about trust, or the lack thereof, in a relationship, and the churning music adds some punch to the words.

In live performance, the native Norwegian herself gravitates toward acoustic instruments, leaving her synths to a touring bandmate. The result is much less urgent, giving the lyrics more room to breathe. In so doing, Farao, born Kari Jahnsen, emphasizes the mesmerizing quality of her voice.

Farao treated a half-full room to such a delivery at U Street Music Hall on Wednesday night, touring in support of Till It’s All Forgotten, which was released earlier this month, as the opening act for UK punk trio The Cribs.

On the album, another song — “Fragments” — starts out almost like a chiptune but then blossoms into layers of instruments and voice as Farao paces herself alongside the music. Singing in almost a hushed nursery rhyme style, she uses repetition of words to mirror what is happening instrumentally to pleasing effect. The song is about not being able to see the full picture with its refrain “If you don’t believe me, no one will.”

It’s also a song ready-made for performance as its appealing structure translates well to the stage.

Although Farao plays many different instruments, seeing her live is truly the best opportunity to listen to her voice, which she uses to good effect in concert.

Up until last night, Farao was touring at the opening act for The Cribs. Now, she has three more dates in the United States without them — tonight in Portsmouth, NH, and Tuesday in Los Angeles and Wednesday in San Francisco. She’s a worthy opener and well worth contemplating if she happens to perform solo.

Hey, in case you missed it, DC native Laura Burhenn was kind enough to give us a cool interview about the third album from The Mynabirds earlier this month — and the Los Angeles-based Mynabirds are about to have a homecoming show at U Street Music Hall this Saturday, Sept. 26.

The new album, Lovers Know, builds upon and extends The Mynabirds’ catalog with some lovely folk pop as well as some sweeping ballads, like “Hanged Man,” a soaring if sad song that allows Laura to show off her skills on piano.

Don’t Miss: Gardens & Villa @ Rock and Roll Hotel, 9/24/15

Gardens & Villa, a quartet out of Santa Barbara, Calif., have an interesting sound that manages to fall somewhere between post-punk and power pop while exuding an appealing lo-fi atmosphere.

Or at least that’s my impression upon a few listens of the band’s third album, Music for Dogs, released on August 21 via Secretly Canadian. The new album was produced by Jacob Portrait, who I once saw play with Blouse, a man who has a very solid modern take on the post-punk/new wave sound.

Singles like “Everybody” carry a certain urgency alongside a pleasing dance beat despite the casualness of the ’70s soft-rock vocals of singer Chris Lynch.

Gardens & Villa clearly have entered a busy period, as their third album comes right on the heels of their 2014 second album, Dunes. And they return to DC to perform Thursday, Sept. 24 at the Rock and Roll Hotel.

Ultimate Painting take their name from a piece of artwork created by Drop Artists of the Drop City commune of Colorado in 1966. Around the same time in New York City, Lou Reed and John Cale formed the Velvet Underground.

Just a few years back, James Hoare of Veronica Falls and Jack Cooper of Mazes formed a third band, drawing its name from the colorful piece of art and its sound from guitarwork by Reed, Cale and Sterling Morrison. The result is a jangly, occasionally bluesy, sort of psychedelic rock that pays tribute to the ’60s quite masterfully while sounding fresh.

The duo played a show at Comet Ping Pong on Tuesday as a stop on their tour in support of their new album, Green Lanes, released in August by Trouble in Mind. They kicked off their set with some songs from their debut, a self-titled album released in 2014.

California skate punk quartet FIDLAR have released a second album, Too, and they are touring to support it with a stop at the Black Cat on Monday, Sept. 28.

The band released Too on Sept. 4 via Mom+Pop, and the first single from the album was the raucous “40 oz. on Repeat” — the video for which pays tribute to famous videos like the Beastie Boys’ “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party),” Weezer’s “Undone,” Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady,” and Oasis’ “Wonderwall,” among others. Aaaaand it does so with cardboard sets.

FIDLAR have been well-regarded as a live act since their formation in 2009 due to their energetic performances. The Los Angeles Times called the band “bratty, amphetamine punk rock made to soundtrack the noise of crushing cans on ones forehead.”

Australian indie rock trio Dune Rats open for FIDLAR. Tickets are available online.

Ride

The past 25 years have been quite good to the band Ride.

Although the shoegazer quartet disappeared in 1996 after four full-length albums, they returned more powerful than ever with the launch of a new leg of their US reunion tour on Thursday with a very nearly sold-out show at the 9:30 Club.

Now, I’m a latecomer to shoegaze in general and Ride specifically so I can’t claim to know how good the band were in the past. I can tell you now that they are remarkably talented guitarsmiths today, however, and their earliest stuff in particular holds up incredibly well.

Classics like “Vapour Trail” from their first album Nowhere catch the band at their most pensive — four chords awash over the ears of the audience in gentle waves as lead guitarist Andy Bell sings reflectively of the memory of a love “like a vapour trail in a deep blue sky.”

Surf disco? It is perhaps a genre whose time has come? Why not combine resplendent acoustic instruments with vibrant synths into one cohesive hypnotic dance performance?

Multi-instrumentalist Kari Jahnsen, known as Farao, seems to have done just that, as she adds delicate electronics to her crystalline voice on songs on her debut album, Till It’s All Forgotten. And in addition to synthesizers, she apparently also plays guitar, organ, glockenspiel, and sitar. (Farao is making an additional statement as to what to expect when you listen to her by sporting a David Lynch t-shirt, above, certainly?)

Stream the entire album, Till It’s All Forgotten, starting with the title track, on Soundcloud:

Farao released her debut on Sept. 11 via Arts & Crafts. She’s touring with UK punk trio The Cribs, opening for them at U Street Music Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 23. The two bands together will likely offer an evening of different shades of pop songcraft that should hang very well together.

I’ve never seen Mazes, but I caught Veronica Falls a few years ago at the Black Cat, and I found their sunny, jangly guitar pop to be quite lush.

Well, when I wasn’t looking, UK indie poppers Jack Cooper of Mazes and James Hoare of Veronica Falls formed another band called Ultimate Painting. Indeed, Ultimate Painting released its second album, Green Lanes, this summer (via Trouble in Mind). The songs pleasantly have the same sort of summery, jangly sound found in Veronica Falls.

The duo have been touring in support of the album, expanding the band to a quintent with AJ Cozzi, Neil Robinson and Will Young — and they are visiting Comet Ping Pong on Monday, Sept 21.

With songs like “(I’ve Got the) Sanctioned Blues,” Ultimate Painting bring together some twee guitar with pleasant vocals as they go in search of better times somewhere.

Food Park: Second Anniversary Party @ Duke’s Grocery — 9/16/15

Daniel Kramer (second from right) appeared on Good Morning Washington today to chat about Oktoberfest.

Today is National Cheeseburger Day, and tomorrow is the beginning of Oktoberfest.

That means it’s a good weekend for one Washingtonian in particular: Daniel Kramer, co-owner of Duke’s Grocery (1513 17th St. NW, DC) in Dupont, home of one of the city’s best cheeseburgers, and organizer of the District Oktoberfest party in Chinatown, which offers eight beers at eight bars with one ticket.

Daniel wowed a private party of his guests for the second anniversary of Duke’s Grocery on Wednesday, offering a tasty buffet inspired by the Duke’s menu and an open bar that included Warsteiner Oktoberfest along with other beers, wine and cocktails for guests.

The buffet offered sliders that were a dead ringer to your mouth for the full-sized Proper Burger, which consists of a thin burger topped with Gouda, chili sauce, aioli, pickles and arugula. Washingtonian magazine today named it one of the “most crave-worthy cheeseburgers around DC.”

In addition to the “Proper Sliders,” the buffet offered an assortment of charcuterie, hummus and Asian spring rolls.

The knowledgeable Matt Loscolzo guided guests through tequila tastings.

In the upstairs bar at Duke’s, Daniel will occasionally host tastings of select liquors, and Wednesday’s party was a great opportunity to do just that. Matt Loscalzo, sales rep for Washington Wholesale, served up a popular selection of Roca Patron tequila — including the Patron Silver (unaged tequila), Patron Reposado (aged up to six months), and Patrol Anejo (aged up to a year).

It was a fantastic party all by itself, but the best thing about it is that it heralds another year of Duke’s Grocery. Congratulations, Daniel!

A great buffet included the Proper Burger — albeit in “slider” form.
