There are just things that go well together. My television would say the most likely pairing would be chocolate and peanut butter, but I’d go so far as to say Friday night’s pairing of Band of Horses and City and Colour, the stage name of Canadian singer-songwriter Dallas Green, would put Reese’s to shame.

The co-headlining tour kicked off in Atlanta in August, both bands made stops along the East Coast, including one at Wolf Trap last week, and arrived at The Lyric in Baltimore just in time for a week of perfect late Summer weather.

When I first saw Waxahatchee at the Miracle Theater in 2018, she was already one of her generation’s leading singer-songwriters, with a devoted cult following. She’s long had the respect and admiration of her fellow musicians, like Jason Isbell and Sheryl Crow, who she once opened for at Wolf Trap. On Friday night, she moved up to headline that same venue, supported by Tim Heidecker and Snail Mail, in what was one of the summer’s best shows.

I’ve seen a lot of amazing shows so far this year, but this was by far one of the best: Falling in Reverse took the stage at Jiffy Lube Live on Friday night with an all-star line up that had my inner emo kid crying tears of joy.

With the release of their self-titled debut in 1986, Crowded House made an immediate splash. The album rose to No. 12 on the Billboard charts, and the band scored Top 10 hits with “Something So Strong” and “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” both of which made it into their recent performance at Wolf Trap.

Their catalog is much deeper and extensive than a few big hits, though, and they showed why they’ve developed such a strong international following at their Wolf Trap show.

Mancunian icon Peter Hook recently swung by DC to play songs of New Order and Joy Division at 9:30 Club. It was a welcome return to 9:30 Club for Hooky, who performed there a few times in 2010 and 2011 in the early days of touring with his band Peter Hook & The Light.

Those early 9:30 Club appearances focused on revisiting the albums of Joy Division, but this time around, Hooky and his band dug into the greatest hits of both rock innovators Joy Division and the successor dance band New Order, playing through the tracklisting of the Substance compilation albums for both bands.

While the weather may have made things a little, … well… Complicated, it didn’t stop over 22,000 people from recently packing into Jiffy Lube Live to see Simple Plan and Avril Lavigne on their Greatest Hits Tour. The rain delay unfortunately meant that the opening band, Girlfriends, was unable to play their set, but lucky for us, we did get to see them come out to perform a few songs with the two headlining acts.
