As the lone US national park founded in the name of the performing arts, Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia, is ceremonious and alluring not just for concert attendees, but for the invited musical guests, who get an entirely different view of the place.

Like the wolves said to run wild on the property in past centuries, the acts taking the stage of the storied Filene Center customarily do so with invigoration granted by the vast park and its hidden delights. The mostly forested grounds — 117 aces in total — can restore any band that’s been chasing adventures out on the road, and the park has proven to be an ideal setting for musicians to reach new heights together.

Any number of people have bemoaned the state of mainstream country music. Tom Petty called it bad rock music with fiddle. Podcaster and author Tyler Mahan Coe cuts off his discussions of the history of the genre at the year 2000. But there are still folks carrying the torch for classic country, although you may not find them on the pop-dominated country radio stations. Among these folks are Austin, Texas’s Silverada, who headlined The Atlantis recently.

In the 1960s, Jimmie Dale Gilmore told the audience at The Birchmere during a recent performance, “I had been a folksinger in Lubbock, where there was very little demand for that.” Amidst his performances at various coffee shops, where he was making a handful of dollars for a performance, he was paid $400 by the parents of early rock legend Buddy Holly to record one of his songs.

In the roughly six decades since, Jimmie had forgotten about it until his wife found the tape in a box of his old things. “If Buddy Holly’s parents had paid me $400 to record the song,” Dave Alvin said, “I would have remembered the song.

Howard Jones recalled visiting Columbus, Ohio, in the 1980s for a date on his One to One Tour. The club was packed, and tequila was flowing. Howard and his brother — bassist Martin Jones — may have enjoyed a drink or two while performing over a memorable night, the English musician recalled.

Sharing the story during his most recent visit to Columbus for a show at TempleLive at the Columbus Athenaeum, Howard and his present-day band showed the audience an equally good time over the course of a 14-song set that included One to One’s terrific “You Know I Love You, Don’t You?” No tequila was necessary for good vibes and rampant dancing to flow through a very full house.

Melissa Etheridge and the Indigo Girls both made a huge splash with their self-titled albums, released in 1988 and 1989, respectively. Their popularity only grew over the next decade when they came out as lesbians and became queer icons who were able to stay true to their musical visions and to themselves while finding mainstream success. And each, in their own way, has inspired a number of musicians — particularly other women. Their distinctive styles were on full display in their recent appearance together at Wolf Trap.
