John Darnielle, the songwriter behind the Mountain Goats, has a devoted fanbase. During his recent performance at Wolf Trap, there were frequent calls of “I love you, John.” This love for John comes down to a couple of things: First, he is one of the best songwriters working today, and, second, his unabashed passion for off-the-beaten track subject matter, like professional wrestling (Beat The Champ) and fantasy role-playing games (In League With Dragons), connects with people who may not often see themselves and their interests represented in popular song.

In 2023, Andy Frasco & The UN released a new album, L’Optimist, via Fun Machine Records/Soundly Music. Since then, Andy and the band have been on the road — first on their own and then with Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Dogs in a Pile. (They return to that tour laster this month!)

Meanwhile, Andy Frasco & The UN ventured out on their own for some headlining dates including a recent show at Union Craft Brewing in Baltimore. Steve Satzberg was there to photograph the show!

AJR’s The Maybe Man Tour might be the adult boy band indie pop version of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

Going in with the vaguest of knowledge (I knew the hits and that they were brothers from NYC — and Ryan, the R in AJR, produces their music), what I recently saw at Capital One Arena was nothing short of shocking in terms of production. AJR’s set was over two hours of moving screens and stages, actors as astronauts, and various sets, interactive songs throughout the arena, and at times one of the members dangling in the air.

Glam rockers The Struts recently closed their marvelous show at The Anthem with their thriller “Put Your Money on Me” from their debut album, Everybody Wants. Throughout the show, frontman Luke Spiller totally dazzled the comfortably full house, but he saved his best moment for last.

As The Struts extended the beat of the song, Luke waded down into the heavy crowd, gently yet decisively parting them to clear a path in front of him. He then led the right side and left side of the room in bebop-style singalongs separately and in unison, totally and completely putting the show into showmanship.

One of the joys of concert-going is seeing an artist from far away make a long awaited trip to your city. I remember the buzz living in Edinburgh as Kendrick Lamar was set to visit Scotland, and last week, I had the pleasure of experiencing a similar transatlantic exchange.

Arriving from London, neo-soul artist Lianne La Havas thus recently graced the stage at The Atlantis in DC.

Live Review: Black Pumas @ Wolf Trap — 7/28/24

Black Pumas

What a difference just a handful of years makes. The last time I saw Black Pumas perform was on the heels of their self-titled debut. The single, “Colors” was all over the radio, lifting them into the spotlight. Things were moving quickly. Grammy nominations followed as did pressure for a follow up, and then the duo hit the brakes.

But last summer they came roaring back with their sophomore record, Chronicles of a Diamond (on ATO Records). And just like that the Texas-based duo of Eric Burton (vocal/guitar) and Adrian Quesada (guitar) were back.

Black Pumas feel like they’ve been around for decades, but in reality, they met in 2017. Steeped in the sounds of Marvin Gaye and Al Green, Black Pumas create a groove that’s undeniably catching. But it’s their live show that becomes another thing entirely, as seen recently at Wolf Trap.
