English singer-songwriter Ben Howard had plenty of reason to celebrate on his recent sweep through the states. His sophomore album, I Forget Where We Were, just turned 10 years old and his latest record, Is It?, was released last month.

Howard began his trek across the continent in early July, starting in Montreal and wrapping it up last week in Denver. He sold out gigs along the way as fans packed into venues with the intention of basking in the ethereal, absorbing presentation that has helped him amass a world-wide following.

Beck

Beck is an artist with a discography that’s eclectic — to say the least. From folkish beginnings to hip-hop inspired rockers to soul and pastoral acoustic songs, Beck’s musical trajectory is certainly not a straight line.

Some songs, though, as Beck recently told the audience at Wolf Trap, never really had the opportunity to be performed live. So in the Spring, Beck put together a tour of various stops, where in each stop the symphony orchestra in that city would provide the accompaniment, along with Beck’s own band.

Fantasia recently graced the stage of The Theater at MGM National Harbor for her first of two sold-out shows. Before she began her set, she gave the disclaimer, “Ladies, if your feet hurt, take your shoes off!” This was a warning of the foot tapping and soul-snatching event about to take place. The crowd erupted in laughter but were still not prepared for what was to come.

Americana artist Eilen Jewell last visited our area in 2022, as part of a double bill with Chris Smither. Her absence has been felt by her devoted fans, who expressed their love for her during her recent appearance at The Hamilton Live.

Jewell has a special connection to The Hamilton Live. It was there where her daughter, who is now 10 years old, took her first steps. Keeping it in the family, her daughter was handling merch table duties.

In a recent two-night visit to the Warner Theatre in DC, The Pretenders opened with “Losing My Sense of Taste” from 2023’s Relentless, and I was frankly gobsmacked.

Here was Chrissie Hyde, an absolute legend at 72 years old, standing in front me sounding as clear and vital and familiar as ever, and she was singing a new tune that really fit her as well as her over-the-knee boots.

Styx and Foreigner have teamed for their 2024 Renegades and Juke Box Heroes Tour, and recently a very large crowd at Jiffy Lube Live was ready to believe it was 1981 again.

Texas took over The Fillmore Silver Spring recently as That Mexican OT’s Texas Technician Tour sold out the room for his biggest ever show in the DMV. It’s not often that you see a hip hop show with a crowd full of cowboy hats, boots, and big belt buckles, but OT — along with fellow Texans Maxo Kream, DRODi, and Hogg Booma — brought out the inner cowboy in everyone.

A sold-out audience at The Anthem recently swooned over indie-pop star Faye Webster, who left concertgoers with a sweet indie-folk taste in their mouths.

While there are many musicians who impress by pushing the limits of the electric guitar, Cory Hanson drinks from a different goblet.

And once any discerning listener has witnessed the LA-based artist performing with his band, Wand, forever expanded will be their vision of how far a rock composition can venture and how mighty it can be.
