Appearances can sometimes be deceiving, and such is the case in the Tennessee-based band mercury, fronted by singer-songwriter Maddie Kerr.

In the recent performance at DC9, the slender frontwoman with unwieldy hair did not at first glance appear to be the sort of musician who would generate a tremendous sound drawing from psychedelic rock melodies and sludgy grunge riffs, but that is exactly what mercury did in a substantive show of musical might.

Everyone could learn a thing or two from Shannon Shaw.

The bass player and leader of Oakland-based Shannon & The Clams, she’s risen to prominence over the course of the past 15-plus years as she and her bandmates have developed their own formula to mix the desirous sounds of oldies R&B with lo-fi, trippy garage punk.

But what Shaw’s endured in recent times makes her one of the bravest human beings taking any stage today (and recently the Black Cat stage).

Australian percussionist G Flip hoped to make fans of those unfamiliar with them attending a recent sold-out show at 9:30 Club.

Her goal: To have new listeners turn to their friends and say, “Y’know what? G Flip is fucking all right.”

Judging from the enthusiastic and even boisterous response to the following dynamic performance at 9:30 Club, I would say G Flip exceeded their goals: The audience roared for more and more from the multi-faceted artist.

In 2001, British siren Sophie Ellis-Bextor released her debut solo album, Read My Lips, and it did rather well in her native United Kingdom and not so bad in most of the Western world.

It largely went unnoticed in the USA, however, which was too bad, as Sophie is a wonderful performer, a true disco maven, and an entertaining spirit. Her American fortunes changed in 2023, when the dark comedy film Saltburn used her debut album’s second single, “Murder on the Dancefloor,” in the movie’s ridiculous closing scene, celebrating the main character’s macabre achievements. And thus, Sophie quickly lit up the ears of Americans who suddenly realized they were missing out on more than 20 years of great music.

Capitalizing on this momentum, Sophie booked a USA tour — her first! — which included a recent sold-out date at 9:30 Club in DC.

While I’ve never been to Pearl Street Warehouse in DC before, I do like the venue a lot. Situated on the wharf, it boasts an indoor/outdoor bar and balcony seating in an intimate setting. Quite frankly, combined with the weather on my revisit visit, it was the perfect setting for Kyle Smith and Mike Pinto to bring some reggae rock vibes to the week and move us into the weekend.

Power pop legend Joe Jackson is touring the USA once again, and he visits the Lincoln Theatre in DC on Monday, June 10.

Joe presents his Two Rounds of Racket Tour in DC, featuring a solo set of his original songs and a set based on the album What A Racket! – the first performance in more than 100 years of the songs of forgotten music hall genius Max Champion, featuring a nine-piece band.

Not all festivals can thrive, but few were founded for the very sake of uniting and nurturing an entire community of devoted musicians and their enthusiastic followers.

This year’s Memorial Day weekend brought yet another unforgettable edition of DelFest as more than 25,000 revelers made their way to the Allegany County Fairgrounds in Cumberland, Maryland, to enjoy live music, amusement, and gorgeous scenery over the course of four days along the North Branch of the Potomac River.

Arguably the most influential of all bluegrass festivals, DelFest continued to set itself apart with what was billed as the 16th go-round of the gathering named after a living legend — bluegrass hero Del McCoury — and now hosted by his esteemed family in association with High Sierra Events.

As part of their Endless Summer Gold Tour, The Beach Boys brought their quintessential California sound to the perfect summer venue — Wolf Trap National Park’s Filene Center — on a recent beautiful afternoon. With mostly sunny skies, a nice breeze, and the lush trees surrounding the historic outdoor amphitheater, it was an ideal setting to revisit the timeless hits of America’s longest-running band. June marks the 50-year “Gold” anniversary of their classic Endless Summer album compilation.
