Live Review: Roger Waters @ Capital One Arena — 8/16/22

If you describe punk as a movement — a musical way of expressing the frustration of the dispossessed — then Roger Waters, co-founder of Pink Floyd, is punk, and probably more punk rock now than current popular outfits that are self-styled punk rock. And that punk ethos was in display at the Capital One Arena recenlty when Waters and his band brought the This Is Not A Drill Tour to the nation’s capital.

Creating an immersive, in-the-round experience, Roger Waters’ set was both a journey back in time (most of the set included Pink Floyd tunes) and a mirror, reflecting the state of the world we live in, and doing it all in a way only Waters could pull off.

I guess hearing The Cult bang out classics like “Fire Woman” and “Sun King” got someone a little too fired up at the band’s performance last week at The Anthem because lead singer Ian Astbury took it upon himself to jump into the crowd and break up a scuffle near the front row while the band performed “Rain” late in the set. Of course, there’s video.

“I’m going to write the most positive song I’ve ever written in my entire life!” Howard Jones declared to himself when crafting the pandemic-era album, Dialogue, which has released this year. He was inspired to write as “things were getting better,” and the result was worthy!

Now, the British new wave singer-songwriter is known for his share of positive messages, so this was a tall order in deed. The new song, however, “Celebrate It Together,” one of three new tunes performed by Howard in his recent appearance at 9:30 Club, was embraced with enthusiasm by the very full house.

In fact, the entire night was something of a lovefest with the talented Mr. Jones in top shape, commanding a full array of synthesizers, accompanied by his long-time friend Midge Ure as opener.

Live Review: The Psychedelic Furs w/ X @ The Fillmore Silver Spring — 7/17/22

The music of The Psychedelic Furs is the haze of a muggy summer day. It hangs in the air, and you can see wafting up it as you move through it. Their music is the gentle breeze that breaks through that haze, and it’s the downpour that happens when the humidity becomes too much to bear. The cool air that follows is also the music of The Psychedelic Furs — crisp and refreshing.

The sweet relief does not come without a bit of unpleasantness, and that is a key ingredient of The Psychedelic Furs’ compositions. We were reminded of such on a particular muggy day recently when The Psychedelic Furs showered The Fillmore Silver Spring with fuzzy earworms, wrought in extraordinary confidence and competence.
