Towheaded and impressionable, I found Bringing Down the Horse at Sam Goody’s end-of-row display shelf in the Towsontown Mall, its stamplike W and stars drawing my eyes. I pulled a pile of ones out of my pocket, the slowly-earned financial detritus of chores completed and change received, counting out the $16.99 required. Then (and maybe now), spending my money filled me with some worry, concern that my decision would ruin my mood. That, somehow, this thing I’d promised my time wouldn’t be worthy of it.

Whitey Morgan and the 78’s cut a distinctive appearance, one that could mislead audiences, such as those at the band’s recent concert at Rams Head Live. Many of the players in this talented modern-day honky tonk band look like ex-football players gone hippie — big, bulky bodies with long hair and bushy beards.

As a ’90s kid, I certainly love much of the music from the decade of my childhood, but I have often wished I could go back to the ’60s and ’70s to see some of the bands we will never see the likes of again. Listening to St. Paul and the Broken Bones makes me feel like I’m listening to something from those eras and yet, they just formed in 2012. I got to experience the eight-piece soul group live recently at Rams Head Live in Baltimore.
