Yumi Zouma, by way of New Zealand, captivated the DC9 crowd on Wednesday, June 8th with a fine mix of dreamy pop, synth hooks and Christie Simpson’s exuberantly clear voice.
With their name etched in cursive, hovering in the stage background in bright lights, Yumi Zouma played 14 fun, breezy songs from their new album and two previous EPs.
If the opportunity to indulge in three hours of unadulterated beer tasting is presented to you, will you seize it?
This Saturday, May 21st, is the DC On Tap Beer Festival (part of a larger craft beer festival series put on by American On Tap across the country).
Seize the opportunity! You can sample over a 150 beers from more than 80 different breweries, including DC breweries like 3 Stars, Handsome Beer and Atlas Brew Works.
This week (May 16-22) is also American Craft Beer Week, so it is extra apropos that you go.
There will also be food for purchase, live music and a few vendors to peek at while you steel yourself for the next rounds of beer.
Just to whet your appetite a bit, here are just a few of the beers I’ll be targeting:
- Maine Brewing Company – Mean Old Tom (a mean, old stout with hints of vanilla)
- Caboose Brewing Company – Saison (they opened in VA about a year ago, and I haven’t tried any of their beers yet)
- Brewer’s Art – Zeke’s Coffee Porter (should wake me up!)
- Handsome Beer Company – Strange Charm (a brown ale with a Belgian twist from the newest DC-based brewery – they rent space from other breweries for now)
It may be summer, but I still like them dark.

‘On Friday, June 5, 2015, Union Market will bring back its wildly popular drive-in movie series. Best known for honoring themed movies, the June 2015 series will “flashback” every Friday, rolling out films that salute the ‘80s and ‘90s decades. The June line-up will feature blockbuster hits Jurassic Park, Pretty Woman, Space Jam and Beverly Hills Cop. Union Market’s June Drive-In Series is supported by Shinola, the makers of handcrafted, American-built watches, bicycles, leather goods and journals.
The classic American pastime will take place in Union Market’s spacious parking lot, projected on the two-story front wall. The fare is $10 per car, or free in the picnic area for walk-ups & bikers on a first come, first serve basis. Car passes can be purchased here, with a portion of ticket sales benefitting the Wheatley Education Campus, located in DC’s nearby Trinidad neighborhood. Patrons can either tune in through a car radio or listen over the market’s loud speakers.
The DC Rollergirls will return to this year’s series, on-hand delivering speedy snacks and drinks on wheels. All 40 Union Market vendors will remain open for service, and cinephiles craving a salty-sweet mashup will enjoy complimentary Shinola Cola and popcorn throughout the evening.’
