In a few short weeks, Spoon will find themselves in a three-night residency at SXSW, and then the very next day they will release their new album Hot Thoughts on Matador Records. Spoon will then continue a tour that will eventually land them at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, on Sunday, July 30.

SXSW is certainly a homecoming for Spoon, as the band formed in Austin, Texas, in 1993. Spoon will perform at SXSW on March 14, 15, and 16. And they are sure to showcase songs from their upcoming ninth studio album — of which Uncut said, “Hot Thoughts finds Spoon at the peak of their considerable powers… cementing their place in the firmament of undeniably great rock bands.”

Spoon first introduced the second single from the new album, “Can I Sit Next to You,” through a sneak attack, authorizing its play in various clubs and venues, as American Airlines boarding music, and as bumper music by house bands on late night television shows. Sneaky, indeed.

Recently, Spoon released the song’s video, which was directed by Marcel Dzama, who has collaborated with Beck and Bob Dylan. Watch the official music video for “Can I Sit Next to You” by Spoon on YouTube:

The release of “Can I Sit Next to You” follows the album’s first single and title track. “‘Hot Thoughts’ rises and falls like an orchestral disco opus, with singer Britt Daniel first unleashing a mechanized croon over a simple beat and trembling strings that bursts with a flourish of guitars,” noted Rolling Stone.
