Fabulous surf rockers High Waisted are visiting from New York to perform at DC9 on Sunday, April 2, and we strongly recommend you make plans to see them! The snappy quartet impressed us so much in their DC debut performance a little over a year ago that we named them one of our top 10 concerts of 2016.
High Waisted consists of Jessica Louise Dye (vocals, guitar), Jono Bernstein (drums), Steven Nielsen (guitar), and Jeremy Hansen (bass). Sassy Jess sings sunny, sometimes subtly subversive songs, while the rest of the band transport you to wave-swept shores. The surf punks dropped their full-length debut album, On Ludlow, via Eat Trash Be Free in March 2016, and they make a great show out of its 12 strong songs (although I hear they may have at least one new song up their sleeves).
Watch the official music video for “Trust” by High Waisted on YouTube:
At another High Waisted show at Black Cat last April, I observed, “With her guitar slung over her shoulder, Jess Dye slinks and slithers along bright grooves, aided and abetted by her bandmates.”
Still perhaps my favorite High Waisted track is one of their excellent instrumentals, which always reveal their love for The Ventures. I can always listen to the vibrant “Shanghai Spy,” which should have been the theme music to a television caper starring Bruce Lee in 1966.
Oh and hey, High Waisted are in Raleigh, North Carolina, tonight! Check them out there (or one of several shows across Virginia) if you can.
Our DC show is going to be a whole lot of fun! Buy your tickets online.
