Emancipator, born Doug Appling, released Baralku, his fifth studio album, late last year via his own Loci Records, and it hit #1 on the iTunes Electronic Chart. Emancipator is touring his new album with a show at 9:30 Club *this* Saturday, Feb. 3. You can win tickets to go with Parklife DC!
A classically trained musician, Emancipator combines downtempo, hip hop, world music, and field recordings with jazz, folk, and classical melodies to create ethereal compositions. He launches the Baralku Tour tonight, Jan. 30, and it arrives in DC in just a few days. The tour’s five-piece band adapts to what’s happening in the concert hall each night, Emancipator said.
“We carve out parts of the show for improvisation,” Emancipator noted. “A lot of the parts that end up being incorporated into the songs later on come out of these improv spaces. We’ll play something live and decide, ‘That sounded great,’ so we start playing it like that at the next show.”
