One of my favorite things about covering concerts is when I go to a show and it completely elevates my appreciation for an artist or their music. That’s exactly what happen when Steve Lacy’s Give You the World Tour made its DMV stop at a sold out The Fillmore Silver Spring last weekend.
Backed by his band (all dressed alike) and a gigantic silver Gemini set, laser and light show included at The Fillmore Silver Spring on Oct.15; Steve played his entire new album Gemini Rights while mixing in songs from his previous projects, dating all the way back to his first EP, Steve Lacy’s Demo. The energy was through the roof the entire night while the packed crowd sang along word for word to every record.
Steve started things off slowly with “Buttons” and “Only If” before switching to an acoustic guitar for “Mercury.” He shuffled through different guitars for different songs throughout the night. Once funky records like “Playground” and “Lay Me Down” came around the laser show started. The colorful lights shot out of the Gemini set and bounced around the room, with the crowd reaching out for them as Lacy and the band jammed on.

Steve interacted with the crowd, talking about fast thing were changing since the album had come out and how he felt shy on the night for some reason, though none of it showed in his performance. He even took the time to give everyone a water break while he strummed his guitar and hummed along “who needs water” as kids raised their hands and security passed back cups. He brought opening act Foushee back out to perform their duet “Sunshine” as the pair danced around the stage. He paused the show to thank everyone for giving him the No. 1 record in the country before playing his hit “Bad Habit.”
As the song ended, Steve and the band left the stage and the room went black for a few seconds before the encore chants started to ring out. After about five minutes the lights started to come back up as the opening drums “Dark Red” began. Steve and the band hit stage for one last song.

I was a fan of Steve since his days as the guitar player in the The Internet but hadn’t paid much attention to solo work since his first project. Steve’s blown up since “Bad Habit” was released and although I liked the album, I still wasn’t completely into it until I saw it live. Since the show, Gemini Rights has been in my daily rotation, and it’s safe to say Steve Lacy’s made me a believer.
The Give You The World Tour’s USA leg wraps up in Steve’s hometown of Los Angeles on Nov. 1. Be sure to catch the show if you can, most dates have already sold out.
