Each time flipturn’s played somewhere in the DMV, it’s felt like a victory, a milestone celebration for the indie rock band out of Fernandina Beach, Fla.
Fitting it was this past Sunday night for the group to stuff The Anthem to the gills with emotionally charged fans for what the bandmates said was its biggest headlining show yet.
Recently announced on the Day 2 lineup at this summer’s Newport Folk Festival, flipturn has been gaining momentum since it came together in 2015. It’s released an assortment of EPs, but just two full-length albums, including Burnout Days, which dropped in late January on Dualtone.

Comprised of Dillon Basse (lead vocals/guitar), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), Madeline Jarman (bass), Mitch Fountain (guitar/synthesizer), and Devon VonBalson (drums), flipturn lit up the state-of-the-art Wharf venue, which holds as many as 6,000 attendees, on April 12.
“There’s so many of you … this is unreal,” Basse said to begin what became a spectacular night in the nation’s capital.
