The specter of a torrential downpour and bad air quality did not stop Pennsylvania’s Motionless in White from taking the stage on July 18 at Bristow, Virginia’s Jiffy Lube Live. Joined by Static Dress, Fit for a King, and Lorna Shore, MIW had much to celebrate. This was the third stop of the massive The Sweat and Blood Tour, in support of a new album, with dates through the end of November.

Following solid opening performances, front man Chris “Motionless” Cerulli guided the crowd back and forth through the hallways of time with songs both old, like 2010’s “Abigail” and 2012’s “A-M-E-R-I-C-A”, and new material from their just-released album Decades. Instant favorites like the ballad “RIP.” replete with gothic tower stage lighting overlays and two ballroom dancers, locked in a fated romance, had the audience’s collective voice soaring.
After a short break where the audience was treated to a small behind-the-scenes look at Cerulli’s backstage make-up touch-up, he took the stage for a well-received cover of Corey Hart’s “Sunglasses at Night.” Much of the crowd played along, donning their own pair while getting a full ’80s stage treatment, pink and blue geometric light patterns marching down the stage.

Motionless In White showed up with a mission to entertain. The stage setting for each song both intentional and layered. The band members made skillful use of the large stage, freely moving between the width of the stage and the upper and lower levels, important for such a large venue. And while the band movement and light show was enough to grab and keep anyone’s interest, MIW also often deployed a group of dancers who brought yet another level of spectacle to the performance. From belts that made sparks fly, to laser battles, to trick-or-treating cheerleaders throwing treats into the crowd, the theatricality of the performance was impressive.
While the show felt truly indulgent to watch, the quality of the musicianship remained the backbone of the concert, giving the crowd a mix of heavy breakdowns and soaring vocals. There was an especially impressive moment when Motionless brought out Fit for a King’s Ryan Kirby to assist with delivering a devastatingly heavy rendition of “Slaughterhouse,” reminding us all just how well the music stands on its own.
