At The Anthem, Masego turned a recent Saturday night in DC into a smooth, interactive set built on live instrumentation, saxophone, humor, and effortless crowd control.
Masego brought his Fix Your Face Tour to The Anthem in Washington, DC, on August 22 for a night that felt smooth, playful, and loud when it needed to be. The Anthem can feel massive depending on the artist, but Masego has the kind of stage presence that makes a big room feel relaxed without letting the energy fall flat.
From the beginning, the show leaned into what makes him different. Masego is not simply standing onstage and running through songs. He builds an atmosphere around groove, personality, and musicianship. With a live band behind him and a piano close at hand throughout the set, the performance often carried the feel of an extended jam session. His music already lives somewhere between R&B, jazz, soul, and funk, and onstage, that blend felt even more natural.
The saxophone is obviously part of the draw, and whenever he brought it out, the crowd responded like they had been waiting for it. It was not a gimmick or a quick flex. It felt like a genuine extension of the performance, giving the set moments that sounded loose and alive rather than overly rehearsed.
That is where Masego shines most. He knows how to make a performance feel polished without making it feel stiff.
Just as impressive was how comfortable he looked controlling the room. He did not have to force the audience into the show. He let the groove do much of the work, while keeping the night personal and interactive. He talked with the crowd, joked with them, and had people laughing between songs, giving the performance a looseness that made it feel less like a rigid setlist and more like everyone was in on the same good time.
The crowd moved with him, sang with him, and stayed locked in even during the slower stretches. That is not always easy at The Anthem, especially when a performance leans more heavily on feel than spectacle, but Masego held the room by keeping the energy warm and consistent. Even when he slowed things down, the audience never seemed disconnected.
The set moved through a wide range of moods without ever feeling scattered. “Wonderwoman” and “Limerence” helped open the night with a smooth, atmospheric feel, while “Heaven,” “Good & Plenty,” and “Someone” kept the room in a softer pocket. Masego did not rush those early moments. He let the audience settle into the sound before shifting toward songs that brought more movement into the room.

Once “Navajo” hit, the audience woke up in a different way. It was one of those songs where the first few seconds were enough to trigger a reaction. “Mystery Lady” brought that same instant energy later in the set, with people singing and moving as if they had been waiting for that groove all night.
Masego’s best songs feel built for a live room because they give the audience something to respond to without making the performance feel predictable.
The middle of the set kept that momentum going with “Gone,” “Dotted Line,” “Recommend,” “Hello,” and “Go.” Those songs gave the night shape, moving between bounce, melody, and the laid-back confidence that makes Masego’s music feel effortless without being simple. Even when the energy pulled back, the room never checked out. The groove was always there.
The later stretch gave the show even more personality. “Old Lady,” “Yamz,” “Breathe,” “Unhinged,” and “QVC” kept the set from becoming too polished, adding humor, looseness, and a little unpredictability. That balance is part of what makes Masego so entertaining to watch live. He can be smooth one second and playful the next, and it all still feels like part of the same musical world.
By the time “Tadow” closed the night, The Anthem was fully invested. The song is one of those records that does not need much explanation. The groove does the work, the saxophone cuts through, and the crowd knows exactly how to respond.

It was the right closer because it brought together everything that made the night work: musicianship, audience participation, and Masego’s ability to make a large venue feel like an intimate jam session.
The production never needed to overpower the performance. The lighting and staging supported the mood without distracting from the live band, piano, saxophone, and personality driving the show. Too much production could have made a performance like this feel less intimate, but the focus stayed exactly where it needed to be: on the groove, the musicianship, and Masego’s command of the room.
By the end of the night, the biggest takeaway was how naturally Masego owns his lane. He does not sound like an artist trying to fit neatly into one genre or one type of performance. He is at his best when he lets all of his influences show at once, and The Anthem crowd responded accordingly.
The Fix Your Face Tour stop in DC was smooth, funny, intentional, and alive — the kind of show that reminds you why live music hits differently when the artist knows how to play not just for a crowd, but with one.
