Chance the Rapper took over Baltimore’s Nevermore Hall last week for a sold-out show on his Coloring Book 10 Year Anniversary Tour, celebrating the release of his 2016 breakout album. Coloring Book launched Chance into a household name, from becoming a judge on The Voice to having his own Kit Kat.
Accompanied by opening act La Reezy, Chance mixed the new with the old and had the packed Baltimore crowd singing into the night on August 25. La Reezy hit the stage first as the crowd still filled in, and his positive energy and New Orleans vernacular made a fan out of me about 4 songs in with “Normal Struggles,” which he followed with a story about his upbringing and how his father refused to support his rap dreams unless he spoke positivity into the world. La Reezy is a name I’ve heard around for maybe the last year, but I had never checked him out. I had zero expectations, but for a new artist, I was impressed with how his performance and his relatability immediately got the room on his side, with the people moving and grooving.
The smoke machines shot off, filling the room as Chance hit the stage next. Backed by his Social Experiment group members, Peter CottoTale & Stix, Chance got straight into Coloring Book out of the gate, opening with the album’s intro, “All We Got,” and immediately taking the place of a 10. He stopped to check in with the crowd as they screamed and showed love back, before he went into “Blessings”; then he jumped to his most recent album, “STAR LINE, performing what I consider a Chicago Anthem, “Ride,” followed by the big single “Tree,” because who doesn’t love a weed song with a message behind it?
Around this time, Chance realized he hadn’t introduced himself: “…I am Chance the Rapper, from Chicago, Illinois. I’ve been up here all this time, and I didn’t even tell y’all my name,” he joked as the crowd roared in approval. He thanked everyone for coming out to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Coloring Book and proceeded to play the entire rest of the album. Chance performed “Summer Friends” as the screen behind him played clips of Chance from his entire life, from family videos and phone videos to arena performances and his first time meeting Beyoncé on MTV. Next, he turned the energy up in the room with “Angels” and “All Night” before starting a frenzy with “No Problems.” Chance got maybe 5 words into the song before the room took over, performing the entire hook – no beat needed – as he watched and smiled. He put his hand out to stop everyone before telling Baltimore they were obviously lit, and he appreciated the energy and love before he started it from the top.

“Mixtape” and “I Might Need Security” followed before Chance pulled out his auto-tune mic for “Smoke Break” and “Juke Jam ”after joking that he felt like he was finally at the level where he could have one. He switched back to the normal microphone as he departed from Coloring Book and took us on a journey around his discography, from his feature on DJ Khaled’s “I’m The One,” back to STAR LINE with “Link Me In The Future” and “The Highs & The Lows” to “Ultralight Beam” with Kanye West.
One of my favorites, “Sunday Candy,” came next before he took us back to Coloring Book one final time with “Finish Line” and “Blessings (Reprise).” Chance closed the night out performing “Cocoa Butter Kisses” and “Pretty” as confetti and streamers fell from the ceiling, before thanking Baltimore and telling us how special the night had been as the “DRAM Sings Special” interlude played him off the stage. The crowd let out a giant roar for an encore just before the video for “Same Drugs” popped up on the screen. Chance returned to perform the song before promising Baltimore it wouldn’t be such a long time before he returned again, and waving goodbye.
Chance’s Coloring Book Ten Year Anniversary Tour is about 1/3 of the way through, wrapping up in Pittsburgh on Oct. 11.
