Phoebe Bridgers brought The Lost Tour to Capital One Arena on Sept. 29, following the release of her well-received album Lost Weekend. The arena show was a stark contrast to her recent pop-up run, when fans often didn’t learn where she was playing until the day of the show. Still, the no-phones rule preserved a little of that mystery. Watching a fellow reviewer scribble notes on a tiny notepad throughout the night somehow made this enormous show feel strangely intimate.

Opening the evening was Bridgers’ songwriting collaborator Alex G, whose indie rock fit comfortably alongside what was to come. Then, a small spinning ball above an auxiliary stage began drawing everyone’s attention. It turned out to be a decoy: The main stage suddenly came to life, revealing Bridgers and her band beneath the bowl-like structure that had been covering them.

After a brief opening verse of “The Outside,” “Motion Sickness” became the first full song of the night. It immediately threw a lasso around every fan’s ears and never let go. Fans danced in little pockets of glee, while other sections nervously bobbed their heads along, almost as if they were afraid of embarrassing themselves in front of their idol.

The early stretch leaned heavily into the indie folk-rock that made Bridgers such a cultural staple. She later moved to the smaller stage, which rotated to give fans around the arena a view of her, before returning to the main stage for a final run that grew louder and more intense with nearly every song. By the time “Kyoto” and “I Know the End” closed the main set, her screams were echoing through the arena. She also performed “On Video,” her new song for the film Primetime, which brought a welcome grunge-tinged edge to the night.

A few moments stood apart from the production. Bridgers’ duet with her brother Jackson was especially sweet, coming after she spoke about the death of their father. Her comparison of her troubled father to Donald Trump drew a strong response from the DC crowd.

Later, when someone in the pit was injured, Bridgers stopped mid-song without hesitation. For all the planning that went into the show, that immediate reaction may have said the most about how present she was throughout the night.

The staging had its own little storyline. Bridgers treated the dome above her like a UFO hovering over the crowd, at times making it appear as though it were abducting the people beneath it. Much of the visual impact came from light and shadow rather than sheer spectacle. Smoke and blue light made it look as though Bridgers were being swallowed by flames, while confetti drifting through the beams resembled colorful sparks raining down around her. Paired with her lyrics, those details had several fans near me reaching for tissues.

As much as I enjoyed the show, however, it often felt one step away from legendary status. Some of the lighting effects seemed designed primarily for the pit and lost their impact even from the lower rows. Others felt like afterthoughts beside the production’s truly mesmerizing moments. The mix also sounded a little tinny from my seat and became less crisp as more musicians joined Bridgers onstage. It was a shame, because the care behind the show’s best moments was so obvious.

I left deeply glad I had gone, and I appreciated the no-phones rule more than I expected. For nearly two hours, the audience proved it didn’t need a screen playing Subway Surfers to stay engaged. Bridgers gave them plenty to look at, and even more to listen to.
