As The Decemberists played “Burial Ground,” a song from their upcoming album, As It Was, So Will It Ever Be — which comes out next month — the band’s frontman Colin Meloy told the audience at The Anthem, “We are all on a one-way path to our graves. We can choose to fight it or embrace it.”

Colin’s unique perspective lies at the heart of The Decemberists, who are an unlikely success story, a band heavily influenced by British folk-rock that uses bouzoukis and accordions and other unusual instruments and whose lyrics often borrow heavily from history and folklore. But successful they are: In 2011, their album, The King Is Dead, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart. They’ve found a dedicated, passionate following who turned out in force for their recent DC show.

It’s hard to fathom that it’s been 30 years since the release of the seminal album Diary by Sunny Day Real Estate. Mostly because I can remember listening to it for the first time in college as I was trying to figure the world (and myself) out. It came out around the same time as a lot of records I ended up loving were released. Rodan’s Rusty and Unwound’s New Plastic Ideas were just two records that came out the same year and, though similar, there was something that Diary had that kept me coming back to it again and again.

Right from the start, you hear these angular guitar lines and melodic bass, right before frenetic drums kick in. But it was Jeremy Enigk’s voice cutting through the distortion like a beam of light that drew me in. That combination of sweet then abrasive in both lyrical content and the instrumentation was compelling.

For the anniversary, Sunny Day Real re-recorded the 1994 album, adding new track, “Novum Vetus” to the track list — their first recording in 10 years. To commemorate the release, Sunny Day Real Estate embarked on a tour where they play the entirety of Diary. And recently, the band stopped in DC’s Howard Theatre to a sold-out house.

Pearl Street Warehouse hosted a wonderfully intimate show on Cinco de Mayo. Jimmy Gnecco, from the band OURS, headlined a three-act show that night.

If you haven’t seen Jimmy Gnecco…go see Jimmy Gnecco. Pearl Street Warehouse is a great spot for a show like this. It’s a small club with a few cocktail tables in the back and a balcony over top of them.

When she started her music career, Carsie Blanton recently told the audience at The Hamilton Live as she introduced “Cool Kids,” she had expectations that may not have been realistic: playing arenas, winning Grammys, and doing a bunch of coke.

Much of that has not come to pass. As she said, “There’s no Grammy for most fun had.”

CCS (or Cansei de Ser Sexy) celebrated 20 years in a boisterous yet easygoing set recently at Black Cat, launching a USA tour that saw the band take a well-deserved victory lap with no new music but plenty of good vibes.

“We used to sing about sex but now we sing about cats,” quipped frontwoman Lovefoxxx, although many songs performed as written were indeed about sex.
