New wave pioneer Lene Lovich broke out in England with two killer albums — Stateless (1978) and Flex (1979). Those fantastic albums burst with originality and musicality — and she brought them to life with her heart and soul recently in an impressive show at Rams Head on Stage.

After recording those two albums, Lene (who grew up in England after being born in Detroit), recruited British mastermind Thomas Dolby to her band for a short time. Dolby toured with Lovich before striking out for a solo career, and most remarkably during that time, he composed for her a single, “New Toy.”

It was then a good bet that Mr. Dolby might appear at Lene’s Annapolis concert, given that he’s lived more than 10 years in nearby Baltimore.

“I’m Not Dead Yet!” — John Cleese and The Holy Grail at 50

It’s funny how a single sentence can pull an entire room of people together. For John Cleese, it was right there in the title, Not Dead Yet! — part self-deprecating joke, part cultural commentary, and entirely on-brand for the 85-year-old Monty Python legend who still knows how to command a stage.

His recent turn at the Music Center at Strathmore wasn’t just a comedy show, and it wasn’t just a nostalgia trip either. It was like watching a man pick through his own legend with tweezers and occasionally a sledgehammer, laughing all the way through.

At age 78, a vibrant Iggy Pop recently growled and stalked along the front of The Anthem stage as he sang The Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” the chugging 1969 hard rock song that set the three-chord blueprint for punk rock. He got the audience to sing along and then he descended from the stage and into the crowd for a stunning communal moment to sing to people face-to-face.

It was an incredibly memorable moment in an evening bursting with brilliant and enduring songs from one of rock music’s most remarkable living legends.

There are nights when a band doesn’t just play a show, they set a room on fire. That’s what happened on Oct. 1 at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, Virginia, when Samantha Fish walked out in her boots, picked up her guitar, and proceeded to tear the place apart with a set that was equal parts muscle, soul, and attitude. If you’ve ever doubted whether blues-based rock could still feel dangerous in 2025, you definitely weren’t there that night.

The night started off with a BOOM!, as confetti cannons showered the sold-out crowd at The Fillmore Silver Spring, and NxWorries opened up their DMV stop on their Why Lawd? 2025 Tour. The super-duo featuring multitalented vocalist Anderson .Pakk and music producer Knxwledge are finally on tour in support of their Grammy-winning album Why Lawd?  from 2024. The guys trickled out singles for almost two years leading up to the album’s actual release, but it definitely lived up to expectations when the project finally dropped.

Now, a year after its release, the guys have finally embarked on tour to let their fans experience the full live show.

Over his long career, Elvis Costello has proven to be one of the most eclectic artists in popular music. While he started out on the bleeding edge of punk, he’s also ventured in country/Americana, and he’s made records with pop composer Burt Bacharach, New Orleans R&B legend Allen Toussaint, and the hip-hop group The Roots.

But it’s his early songs  —  the focus of his current tour, which recently stopped at the Warner Theatre for a two-hour set — that are still the most beloved.

Live Review: Wardruna w/ Chelsea Wolfe @ Warner Theater — 9/28/25

Wardruna is a Norwegian band that has gained a pretty loyal group of fans. They play folk music based on traditional Norse stories and traditions. They also use traditional instruments like the kraviklyra, deer hide drums, jouhikko, and a Seussian-looking horn called the lur. Look them up. I could go down a rabbit hole here about old, traditional instruments so I need to nip that in the bud immediately.

I don’t know about you, but when I think of the 1980s, there are a few things that immediately spring to mind: neon colors, shiny plastic stuff, and A Flock Of Seagulls. And when you think of A Flock Of Seagulls, you think of…two of the biggest hits of the decade: “I Ran” and “Space Age Love Song.” You thought I was going to say singer Michael Score’s hair, didn’t you? That’s a fair assumption but this isn’t a blog about hair. And besides, the hair isn’t in the band anymore.
