There are some bands that make an immediate impression because they’re loud. Others because they’re technically brilliant. Then there are bands like Mac Saturn, who walk onto a stage and somehow make a room feel smaller, warmer and more connected within a few songs.

That was the story Saturday night at The Hamilton Live in Washington, DC, where the Detroit-based group delivered a performance that transformed one of DC’s best listening rooms into a sweaty, soulful celebration of classic rock, funk, rhythm and blues, and modern swagger.

The recent Dorian Electra show at the Atlantis started with minor technical difficulties. Two long white sheets hung at the front of the stage, with a spotlight intermittently strobing and zooming in and out. A few people goofily started to OOOH and AHHH coordinated with the change in lighting – and the entire crowd joined in with scattered giggles. This atmosphere perfectly illustrates Electra’s audience and appeal. Everyone was there to have fun and get silly!

Mumford & Sons recently brought their Prizefighter tour to the Jiffy Lube Live amphitheater in Bristow, Virginia. The London-based bluegrass folk-rock band treated fans to an engaging, moving show – with the temperature hovering in the extremely comfortable low seventies and the occasional breeze from the North, it was the perfect night for a show.

In a recent poll of readers’ opinions on the greatest living American songwriters, Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy came in 20th. He’s been writing great songs for a long, since his days with the pioneering alt-country band Uncle Tupelo. While Wilco may have started out in a similar vein, it’s moved far beyond that, with a body of work that encompasses indie and experimental rock, idiosyncratic takes on classic and power pop, and more.

Over the course of two sets in their recent appearance at Wolf Trap, Wilco showed why they’re one of America’s most beloved, respect, and acclaimed bands.

Alluding to the late Lowell George, leader of the legendary Little Feat in the ’70s, Inara George apologized for not playing one of her father’s songs. “It’s not on the brain,” she said, “and if you know me, you know, if it isn’t on the brain, it isn’t on the brain.”

Instead, she played, “Release Me,” written for her mother, about Lowell, who passed away in 1979, when Inara was just 4 years old. In a night of tender moments in her recent performance at Jammin’ Java, this was perhaps the most tender.

There’s something really cool about seeing a band like Blacktop Mojo in a room like the one at Live at Hub City Vinyl in Hagerstown, Maryland. There are no barricades blocking off the fans, no giant video screens and no production tricks hiding behind a wall of lights. Just a band, a stage, and a crowd packed in close enough to feel every riff rumble in their chests.

The Asheville, North Carolina group Wednesday recently brought their truly unique sound to Baltimore. Taking the stage at a very fitting venue, Nevermore Hall, formerly Rams Head Live! The venue’s more moody refashioning lends an aesthetic backdrop for the band. Led by frontperson Karly Hartzman, the group showcased their impressive talent in bridging the gap between more folk/rural sounding melodies and a much more grunge/emo inspired sound.

The second annual installment of the rebranded All Good Now Festival transformed the historical, wooded grounds of Merriweather Post Pavilion into a sprawling celebration of jam, funk, and legendary music the weekend of June 13-14. At its core it successfully shared the spirit of the old-school, grassroots camping festival into a premier modern amphitheater, the two-day event offering a vision blurring 2 days of contained genre-blurring jams and pure community vibes.
