“We’re gonna play some new songs, we’re gonna play some old songs,” Brittany Howard recently told the crowd at the first of two sold-out nights at the 9:30 Club. What followed was nothing short of incredible. I had seen her perform at the venue back in 2019, on tour for her first solo album, Jaime. It was a great show, but it must be said that this time around there was something about the energy that was off the charts.

When I was a kid there were certain songs that had that feel of waking up on a Sunday with the light streaming in through the window. A lot of those 1970s pop songs had that sound where you could the warmth. As I play Brittany Howard’s new LP, What Now, I get that same feeling. A song like “To Be Still” and the opener, “Earth Sign” from What Now are perfect examples of songs that embody a mood. It’s like that feeling you get when you listen to Nina Simone. It demands your attention. Written during the Covid pandemic, What Now covers a lot of territory — falling in love, losing love, and making it through to some new place.

Late in his set at DC’s The Hamilton Live on Tuesday night, Eric Gales introduced the real star of the evening: Crown, his teacup poodle. “I got her for my wife last Valentine’s Day,” he said, as the crowd oohed and awed over the adorable dog.

Crown shares the name of Gales’s most recent album. Released in 2022, Crown earned Gales his first Grammy nomination, for Best Contemporary Blues Album. “I didn’t win,” he told the audience, “but I’ll be back.”

Live Review: Sunny War w/ Brian Dunne @ Songbyrd Music House — 2/17/24

Sunny War has a unique and beguiling personality. Recently introducing her song “Big Baby” at DC’s Songbyrd Music House, she explained that the title of the song refers to the name she has for her guitar. She went on to say she got Big Baby “from a creepy guy on Craiglist” (as though one meets any other type of guy on that site!). She described the situation as “either I get a guitar or I go missing.”

Needless to say, Sunny got the guitar and didn’t go missing, a fact for which everyone in the crowd at Songbyrd was surely grateful. For 75 minutes, she held the crowd in rapt attention, playing solo with just her acoustic guitar. It takes a special kind of artist to command that level of attention in that format, and Sunny is definitely a special artist. She is a fine guitar player, using a fingerpicking style that hearkens back to the great country blues guitarists.

Sunny told the audience that, before moving to Nashville a few years ago, “I thought I was playing country because no one else on Venice Beach was fingerpicking.” She introduced “New Day” as “the first country song I wrote when I was 16.”

In one of the most amazing new tunes that I’ve heard in a very long time, Wes Leavins of Brigitte Calls Me Baby croons a lyric that truly could have sprang from The Smiths songbook in “The Future Is Our Way Out”:

“Now the end is here/ Everyone said this is how it would be / I’m sorry I can’t help but cry/ And wonder, was the joke on me”

In their recent debut DC headlining show, Brigitte Calls Me Baby closed the concert with the song, which hails from their debut EP, This House Is Made of Corners (released via ATO Records last year). At DC9, Leavins and his bandmates were thoroughly gripping performers, easily mounting the best show of the year so far.
