Holiday gatherings transpired in all shapes and sizes over the past few weeks, but few might have warranted the buildup of the Charm City’s version of the annual tradition known as A Very Jerry Christmas.

A Yuletide bash honoring the late, great Jerry Garcia and all things Grateful Dead, it’s a series of shows hosted every year by Cris Jacobs, who has over the course of his career become one of Baltimore’s most influential and widely respected artists both as a singer-songwriter and by fronting numerous outfits that have showcased his dynamism as a musician.

As a young boy in 1980, I was already a David Bowie fan. But my music appreciation identity truly took form that year when a fellow kid brought a boombox into an elementary school reading period and played “Killing an Arab” by The Cure. He had a cassette of the Boys Don’t Cry compilation album, and he was fascinated by what he heard. I too became intrigued upon hearing it, and I was primed for the flood of great music that would soon come from fellow English bands like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, and more, most of which I would discover via classic MTV.

Many of those bands have toured through the DC area in the past two years, thriving in the time after pandemic lockdowns and ready to celebrate 40 years or more of greatness. These acts are so dominant in my psyche that I forever see them as giants of pop music. And so, it has been very satisfying to witness these MTV-era bands still going strong and also inspiring 21st century bands, many of whom are also spectacular performers.

With this in mind, here are my Top 10 Concerts of 2023.

“I’ve lived almost half my life in Nashville, but this will always be home,” Maggie Rose said in her recent appearance at the Bethesda Theater. In front of a crowd that included many family members and friends, Maggie and her band played two sets, the first consisting of her original songs and the second of festive holiday tunes.

This was my first year shooting for Parklife DC, and it’s been a blast. I started at the end of April, shooting Langhorne Slim and John Craigie at The Birchmere. Since then, I’ve shot 40-some shows at 20-some different venues for Parklife — from cozy clubs like Songbyrd Music House and DC9 to Capital One and CFG Bank Arenas, and even Pink at Nationals Stadium.

I don’t normally write reviews, but I was asked to write a few words about my “Top 10” photos from 2023. I found it very difficult to get down to 10, so here are 12 of my personal favorite photos of the year.

This past year was a fun one for me, musically speaking. I was able to see a lot of shows! I had the opportunity to meet some friends while they were on the road and make some new ones. I saw bands perform that I hadn’t seen in 30 years and saw many bands for the first time. I even went to shows where I didn’t know any of the bands on the bill!

Narrowing all the performances down to ten is a difficult endeavor but one I have placed upon myself. I don’t HAVE to do this, but for some reason I find the challenge as entertaining as it is frustrating! I know I’m going to leave a band or artist out that I think deserves to be in the list. The entire process is a two part equation. The first part is the most obvious: going through every concert I saw this year and choosing who I thought was best. Each artist or band has the same opportunity, regardless of notoriety, venue, or crowd size.

The other half of this equation is picking a photograph that encapsulates the show and why I chose it in my Top 10. So, in no specific order, my ten favorite performances of 2023

In August 2022, I relocated to Bellingham, Washington, looking forward to a new and exciting (but uncertain) future covering the region’s music scene for Parklife DC. Now, as I look back over the last year, I’ve been afforded some extraordinary opportunities to see new artists in lovely, intimate venues.

Although it may not be the musical powerhouse that is the DC metro region, Bellingham’s claim to unique and stellar artists is second to none. The images included here are only a small sample of the great music I’ve experienced since arriving in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. These are my Top 10 photos of 2023.

In recent memory (which, let’s be honest, is foggier than most hair metal smoke machines), I haven’t seen a bigger year in terms of great live music than in 2023. I also feel this is the year I’ve really gotten back to seeing a lot of shows since the Covid-19 pandemic. By rough estimate, I’ve experienced 75 shows this year and have seen around 200 artists perform. I also made a semi-conscious effort to hit as many different types of venues over the past year as I could, which took me from my first stadiums (Lincoln Financial Field and M&T Bank Stadiums) to smaller clubs and house shows.

Now, here’s the tricky part about putting together a list of my favorite shows throughout the year — I loved all of them! No, I’m serious. And this might be part of the beauty of having the ability to choose who I end up covering. I love the music of those artists I attempt to capture either through the lens of a camera or the pen and keyboard.

I did see a lot of artists in 2023 I had never seen before, but I can absolutely — 100% — tell you that they all exceeded whatever expectations I might have had. In lieu of a Top 10, I present my Top 14 concerts of 2023.
