Live Review: Sue Foley w/ Bobby Thompson @ The Hamilton Live — 11/1/23

Sue Foley may call herself the Ice Queen, but she recently played smoking hot blues at The Hamilton Live in DC. A dazzling guitarist, great songwriter, and fine singer, she has an infectious passion for music, and everyone in the audience caught her disease.

A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Foley grew up in “a family of guitar players. All my older brothers and my dad played, so I knew I would, too.” She got bit by the guitar bug in her teens, and, by her early 20s, she was touring. While sitting in with guitarist and singer-songwriter Duke Robillard, she was discovered by Clifford Antone, owner of the Austin blues club and associated label Antone’s, leading her to first album, 1992’s Young Girl Blues.

Happy Hives-o-ween to all that celebrate!

I had Halloween circled on my calendar for quite a while because that was the night that The Hives, aka the self-proclaimed Champagne of Bands, aka The Best Live Band on the Planet, were bringing their rock n’ roll might to Union Stage at The Wharf. The Hives are known worldwide for taking large venues and making them feel smaller with their high-energy shows that demand crowd participation.

How would they handle a big show at a tiny venue?

By performing as much of it on the barricade as the stage.

As we at Parklife DC like to say, A. Savage is actually a very civilized man! It is rather the nom de guerre of Andrew Savage, frontman of the phenomenal Parquet Courts!

Savage recently released his sophomore solo album, Several Songs About Fire, via Rough Trade Records. He performs some new songs and more in a performance at Black Cat on Thursday, Nov. 9!

What use is a night out if it doesn’t wipe the frown off a cranky face and replace it with an ear-to-ear shit-eating grin?

The California Honeydrops is a band that’s found a winning recipe of jazz, funk, and soul, and for the better part of 15 years, members of this San Francisco Bay Area outfit have been serving up good times that could stoke the heart of the most forlorn ticketholder.

This past Sunday night in DC, the Honeydrops heavily dosed 9:30 Club with their trusted, piping-hot spiritual elixir, pouring it on for two incredible sets and a lengthy encore to close out an enlivened, glowing celebration.

“A lot of good bands have played on this stage, so we are going to try to live up to those expectations,” declared Captain Sensible of The Damned recently as the band started their show at The Fillmore Silver Spring.

Well, the band certainly met that goal and more as they played a smashing concert for the DMV on a tour promoting their very good new album, Darkadelic, released in April via EarMUSIC. The performance was dominated by 10 Darkadelic songs, which was OK by the very receptive and bustling crowd at The Fillmore Silver Spring, particularly as The Damned sounded amazing.
