The iconic folk-rock band Dispatch recently took the stage at Wolf Trap, enthralling their loyal fans with an extraordinary and unprecedented performance alongside the prestigious National Symphony Orchestra. The atmosphere was electric with excitement as the band embarked on their first-ever collaboration with a symphony orchestra, a dream they had nurtured for years.

The idea of joining forces with the NSO had been on Dispatch’s mind for quite some time, but various hurdles, including pandemic-related delays and their co-headlined tour with OAR last year, had postponed the realization of this ambition. However, destiny had its way, and on this remarkable night, Dispatch was ready to make history.

Live Review: Nickel Creek w/ Aoife O’Donovan @ Wolf Trap — 7/23/23

Nickel Creek, the self-described “progressive acoustic” band consisting of Chris Thile on mandolin and siblings Sara and Sean Watkins on fiddle and guitar, has been together (including breaks and hiatuses) for 34 years. Thirty-four years ago would be 1989, when the youngest member of the band, Sara Watkins, who is a year younger than me, would’ve been eight years old. It’s enough to make me self-conscious: when I was eight years old, I was just starting to read chapter books.

On Sunday night, Nickel Creek played to a packed audience at Wolf Trap, with Aoife O’Donovan — who has worked with Sara Watkins in the supergroup I’m With Her — opening the show.

“Seems like that guy singin’ this song been doing it for a long time.
Is there anything he knows that he ain’t said?

Falling from Above, Neil Young

At 77, with a recording career stretching back over a half century, Neil Young is a living legend…but don’t call him old, man. At the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn, Washington, Young recently clearly had something to say, performing solo for nearly 9,000 fans in attendance and proving that he’s as vital and relevant as ever.

For Young’s first tour following the Covid pandemic, Neil is playing up and down the US west coast (Neil Young’s 2023 Coastal Tour: Solo in 3D). As a polio (and other health-related ailments) survivor, he’s understandably skittish about exposure to the Covid-19 virus and this first venture back out on the road was planned solely for outdoor venues. After consulting his Farm Aid compañero and friend, Willie Nelson, Young decided he wasn’t ready for indoor gigs saying, “So I’m staying outdoors.”

This is Jenny Lewis’s moment. After spending much of 2021 gaining a new audience by opening for Harry Styles all over America, she released her fourth solo album, Joy’all, in June to universal acclaim. Her tour behind the album brought her to DC for two gigs in two days, at The Atlantis on Friday and then The Anthem on Saturday.

Live Review: Hurray for the Riff Raff @ The Kennedy Center — 7/20/23

The DMV offers incredible cultural opportunities, many of them at no cost. One of those is The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, which brings highly regarded artists and bands to our for free, early evening concerts. Recently, Hurray for the Riff Raff played an excellent full-band set there.

Hurray for the Riff Raff is centered on the work of Alynda Segarra, a Bronx-born and raised singer-songwriter of Puerto Rican heritage. Early in their career, their albums leaned toward a sparse, indie-folk sound. More recent albums, especially last year’s Life On Earth, have expanded their production to a fuller, more pop-oriented approach, even including sound samples and electronic elements in the mix. This is a common path for many artists in this vein; I recently covered First Aid Kit and The Weather Station, who have evolved in a similar fashion.

“Part of the reason we’re here,” Son Volt frontman Jay Farrar recently told the audience at Annapolis’s Rams Head on Stage, “is to celebrate the music of Doug Sahm.”

A legendary musician’s musician who never achieved the popular acclaim he so richly deserved, the late Doug Sahm (he passed in 1999) was something of a mentor to Jay. Jay’s first band, alt-country pioneers Uncle Tupelo, covered Sahm’s “Give Me Back The Key To My Heart” on their final album, Anodyne, with Doug making a guest appearance on the song.

Boy George & Culture Club are touring across the USA in The Letting It Go Show Tour, and they have recruited fellow ’80s chart toppers Berlin and Howard Jones to open. The result is a big show full of incredible music and a guaranteed good time for all.

Last week, Culture Club tour made a stop at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Fla., and the three new wave bands kept the packed amphitheater dancing and singing their hearts out all night long.
