Industrial metal stalwarts Ministry are touring, mostly reflecting on their 2021 album Moral Hygiene (released via Nuclear Blast) but also looking forward a bit to their upcoming record, Hopium for the Masses, due Aug. 4.

On May 3, Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen took his band to The Fillmore Silver Spring, where they were accompanied by openers Gary Numan (yes, the legend) and Front Line Assembly in a big show that pleased a lot of people.

Jason Nicholson shot all three bands, and you must see these photos.

British alternative band Placebo have hit the road in support of their latest album, Never Let Me Go. The tour recently took them to DC’s 9:30 Club where they played a set with a heavy emphasis on their latest album for two sold-out shows. They are joined on tour by Poppy Jean Crawford and my mantra, “Always See The Opener,” holds true for Placebo fans.

Rams Head on Stage in Annapolis, Maryland, recently hosted two Wammie-winning DC bands on a bill soon after their Wammie wins! DC soul greats Oh He Dead took top prize for 2023 Best Pop Artist, Group, in the latest Washington Area Area Music Association Awards — or Wammies — hosted by The MusicianShip.

At Rams Head on Stage, Oh He Dead were joined by openers Flowerbomb, after that DC band’s recognition as the 2023 Best Rock Artist, Group, in the Wammies.

Steve Satzberg photographed both bands in performance.

Swedish synthpop project Fever Ray played at the Anthem on May 1 but were somewhat cheated by a co-headlining gig. They perform to create an entire new world with sound and atmosphere. It’s almost alien, but welcoming to those willing to immerse themselves in the experience.

There’s no questioning the work ethic of the Drive-By Truckers: Every time I’ve seen them perform, they go hard, and, when they’re not under time constraints, they play a long show. And that was exactly what they did at a recent sold-out DC show, delivering 24 songs on the first of two nights at 9:30 Club, which founding member (and one of two principal songwriters) Patterson Hood described as one of their favorite venues to play.

Live Review: Darrell Scott @ Wolf Trap — 4/28/23

If you tuned into this year’s Country Music Awards ceremony, you might have seen Darrell Scott: There he was on guitar, backing up a duet between Chris Stapleton and Patty Loveless on his song, “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive.” The song has been recorded by Patty Loveless and Brad Paisley, and it has achieved some status as one of the classics of country music over the last 30 years.

At a recent performance in The Barns at Wolf Trap, Scott chose to open his set with “Harlan,” originally recorded for his first album, Aloha From Nashville. It’s a gritty tale of survival, coal mines, and family in “the deep, dark hills of Eastern Kentucky,” where “the sun comes up about 10 in the morning, and goes down about 3 o’clock every day.”

While there aren’t supernatural elements to the song (at least not overt ones), it’s not hard to see how it fits into the long, proud tradition of the Southern Gothic.

Funky neo-psychedelic collective Saint Motel recently toured through DC, playing to a super packed sold-out house of enthusiastic concert-goers at 9:30 Club.

And if the audience weren’t enthusiastic, Saint Motel’s own enthusiasm was infectious enough to heighten the well-merited hype to dizzying levels. It was a smart and fun performance that was part of the band’s The Awards Show Tour, which found the group drawing songs for the setlist from golden envelopes — songs selected by fans in a vote.

Frontman A/J Jackson led his five very energetic and talented bandmates through a merry romp of earworms that cheered an already-happy crowd at 9:30 Club.

What better way for one of the UK’s most exhilarating up-and-coming acts to get familiar with urban America than to spend a couple days exploring the nooks and crannies of Charm City?

An exhilarating psychedelic rock band with a distinct throwback sound, The Heavy Heavy made its anticipated Baltimore debut last week, but the Brighton-based group arrived a night early and had plenty of time to take it all in before entertaining a packed The 8×10 in Federal Hill on a recent weeknight.

April showers have been said to bring May flowers, but on Friday night they brought the Jonas Brothers to a packed and soggy Baltimore Soundstage. Braving the weather, the line for this sold-out surprise show by the Jonas Brothers — who have been selling out arenas around the world — wrapped around the block (and then some).

But once inside, that forecast changed in a heartbeat as fans quickly packed the dance floor, several showing off hand-made signs for this special event.

Live Review: Suzanne Vega @ The Birchmere — 4/26/23

Suzanne Vega is a master storyteller in addition being a fantastic singer and songwriter.

At The Birchmere recently, she wove a thread through the evening that went back decades to when she was 18 and working at a summer camp in the Adirondacks. That summer, she met a boy from Liverpool, England, who worked as the arts and crafts counselor for the boys’ camp down the road. They met at the bar that catered to the counselors at both camps and for the rest of the summer they “weren’t exactly dating. More like rolling around in a dirty field.”
