For the better part of two decades, The Wood Brothers have learned to trust their hearts. The Grammy-nominated leaders of American roots music — who will perform at The Anthem in DC on Saturday, May 20, in support of their new album, Heart Is The Hero — have cemented their reputation as freethinking songwriters, road warriors, and community builders, while creating a catalog of diverse music and a loyal audience who’ve grown alongside them through the years.

Midwestern Rock Heroes Red Wanting Blue Bring Passionate Longevity to the Concert Stage
By Mario Tarradell

The music industry is a destructive animal where even the fittest isn’t guaranteed unscathed survival. That means indie rock band Red Wanting Blue is rare indeed. A quarter-century of steady artistic growth is virtually unheard of in the volatile world of rock music, whether it’s an underground band struggling to find the key to success or a multi-million-selling supergroup buckling from the excesses of fame.

Rock out with Red Wanting Blue at The Hamilton Live in DC on Friday, May 19.

Through thick and thin, bluegrass music has shown itself to be a priority for the average concertgoer in and around Baltimore, a city that for decades has boasted a rich even if a bit underappreciated music scene.

This past weekend, the Charm City Bluegrass Festival celebrated its tenth anniversary in proper fashion as Union Craft Brewing played host to a large contingent of music lovers — many from Baltimore, plenty from out of town, too — who enjoyed two consecutive days and nights of live music, revelry, local cuisine, and beverages all while tucked up just north of the city.

The Wavy Navy smoked out the Fillmore Silver Spring for Babyface Ray’s DMV stop on his Courtesy of the MOB Tour. The Wavy Gang general has been touring accompanied by his friend and frequent collaborator, Veeze in support of Ray’s latest album MOB. With a stage dressed like Ray’s personal art gallery — including a wall full of golden guns, fan art, paintings of the Godfather, the Mona Lisa smoking a joint and styrofoam double cups along with some of his album covers and a picture of him and Veeze — Babyface Ray emerged from behind the gallery walls starting the night off with ”6 Mile Show” as the room erupted.

Yves Tumor To Spite or Not to Spite tour: A True Super Star

In a recent concert at Echostage in DC, Yves Tumor’s live performance was nothing short of a religious experience. Speaking little to no words to the crowd aside from humble “thank yous,” Yves captivated the audience and had us all mesmerized with their stage presence and clear passion of performing.

I don’t know for sure, but I suspect that Martin Sexton and KT Tunstall were a having a bit of fun about the Ed Sheeran copyright infringement lawsuit decision last week. If you don’t know the case, one of the writers of Marvin Gaye’s classic “Let’s Get It On” claimed that Sheeran violated the song’s copyright by using the same four-chord structure. Sheeran argued that pop songs, being fairly simple, often use the same chord structure. The court agreed and ruled in his favor.

The Buggles forever will be the answer to a trivia question.

Q: What was the first music video played on MTV?

A: “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles.

But The Buggles meant so much more than that. And surprisingly they remain so given the new life of their first-ever USA tour, opening Seal on a big American production that includes a stop at The Anthem in DC on Wednesday, May 10.

You will never see someone so happy to be where they belong as you will when Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O commands a stage.

“DC! We are the Yeah Yeah Yeahs!” Karen O called out to the audience at their recent sold-out show at The Anthem — a concert that launched a 13-date USA tour that stretches through June 10. It had been 10 years since the Yeah Yeahs last appeared in the National Capital Region — for a festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion. The year after, the band went on hiatus for roughly three years.

And now, Karen O was positively giddy to be back. She smiled, strutted, and danced her way through an exhilarating set of Yeah Yeah Yeahs tunes that thrilled an audience ready to welcome her to town.
