“Music,” declared Teresa Williams at The Miracle Theatre on Friday night, “changes your chemistry, and makes you happier!” She and her partner, multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell, had just finished their opening number, “Let Us Get Together,” with audience singing along and clapping.

For nearly 10 years, the pair played with the late Levon Helm, who played drums for The Band before embarking on his solo career. In those last years of his life, before succumbing to cancer, Helm became famous for the Midnight Rambles held on his Woodstock, New York farm. The Rambles were known for their intimate, lively atmosphere, and Campbell and Williams brought that with them to DC.

Peter Case has been writing and playing music for five decades, beginning with several power-pop bands in the ’70s and ’80s: The Nerves, The Breakaways, and The Plimsouls. Since the mid-’80s, he’s worked as a solo artist, moving to a more singer-songwriter/folk direction. His songs have appeared in TV shows like the HBO supernatural drama True Blood (“Spell of Wheels).”

Parklife DC’s Mark Engleson caught up with Peter to talk about his creative process, his new, piano-driven album Doctor Moan (his first collection of entirely new material in seven years), and a few other subjects surrounding the arts and creativity.

Peter Case performs at Jammin’ Java in the DC metro area on Wednesday, April 12.

In a recent Night of Acoustic Songs and Stories at the Pearl Street Warehouse, Tinsley Ellis and Marcia Ball delivered a variety of original songs and covers, played with virtuoso skill and sung with deep emotion. There was plenty of blues, a little rock ‘n’ roll, and some R&B, too — it was a night that showcased the diversity and appeal of Southern music.

Glosser

I am a great fan of synthpop duos — Eurythmics, Yahoo, the Pet Shop Boys and others put their stamp on me as a kid in the ’80s. Let me now recommend to you new DC dreampop band Glosser, a synthpop duo whose fresh album DOWNER is honestly a bit of a pick-me-up!

I recently caught Glosser live at Union Stage, not knowing they would be on the bill. While I wasn’t paying attention then, I am certainly paying attention now.

In the past, fans often used the name Dragonette to refer to Canadian singer-songwriter Martina Sorbara although the band was technically a trio until 2016.

Today, Martina alone is officially Dragonette, and she is on a North American Tour in support of a new album, Twennies. With her refreshed act, Dragonette was eager to perform the new songs live at Union Stage in DC recently for a jubilant and attentive audience.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band continued their 2023 international tour on Monday night with a sold-out show at DC’s Capital One arena — offering fans a high-energy 26-song setlist that included live staples like “Thunder Road” and “Dancing in the Dark,” alongside new material from Springsteen’s most recent studio albums, Letter to You and Only the Strong Survive.

Live Review: Vance Joy @ The Anthem — 3/25/23

Vance Joy

Having the opening spot for Taylor Swift on her 1989 World Tour and then P!NK on her Beautiful Trauma World Tour is a feat. But then going on to sell over millions of copies of your first album — and following that up with two more critically acclaimed albums, including last year’s In Our Own Sweet Time — just goes to show that Vance Joy’s tank is full and the road is stretching far into the distance.

I was fortunate to be able to cover Joy’s tour stop at the Lincoln Theatre back in 2017, so seeing him and his band take the stage at The Anthem for his In Our Own Sweet Time Tour Saturday night to a sold-out crowd was thrilling. Seeing an artist with a talent for crafting great pop songs rise so quickly is a testament to his skills and ability to draw you in.

Live Review: Kelela @ 9:30 Club — 3/23/23

There’s music for dancing and songs that immerse you in thought. Alternative R&B singer, songwriter, and experimentalist Kelela inhabits a space where the two overlap. The DMV native recently performed for a sold-out audience at the 9:30 Club, where she displayed her unique artistry and why this may be her breakout year.

The venue was filled with fans eager to watch Kelela perform songs from her critically-acclaimed sophomore release, Raven. The performance was her first time showcasing the February release for a DC crowd. The songs delved into vulnerability, radical surrender, and love.
