I thought I’d never see Paul Simon perform live. In 2018, he announced his retirement after his last tour, which stopped at Capitol One Arena. But retirement in entertainment — be it musicians, actors, or pro wrestlers — is often fleeting. The muse driving their achievements is a relentless beast, and many find it hard to quit. Paul returned to the road this year with his band for the first time since Covid. On June 4, he played the first of three nights at Wolf Trap as part his A Quiet Celebration Tour.

There’s something about hearing “Sofa Song” live, surrounded by a thousand people singing every word, that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a time capsule lined with Converse sneakers and teenage heartbreak. But The Kooks’ June 4 return to The Anthem wasn’t just a nostalgia trip — it was a powerful reminder that these Britpop charmers are very much still in their prime.

Bloc Party recently performed live at The Anthem in DC to celebrate 20 years of their debut album, Silent Alarm (2005), and they played through that album’s song and other tunes with impressive power and style. They also made some very smart choices that augmented the intensity of the show, which had the best sound that I had heard in the 6,000-person venue in a long time.

I got this request just a few days before the show, asking if I would be interested in covering Lights at The Atlantis.

I looked into her just a little bit and saw that her debut album was released in 2009. That’s a lot of career to become familiar with in a few days. So I thought…I’ll just go in without listening to ANYTHING! Fresh ears, as it were. I did that with another band recently and it worked out well. So, it seems like I’m on a streak!

Just to the west, in Cumberland, Maryland, the annual bluegrass celebration known as DelFest has become a customary pilgrimage each spring for thousands of music lovers from across the DMV.

But its features major headliners, and of course, numerous sets by the host Del McCoury Band, and bluegrass fans come from far and wide to enjoy four consecutive days and nights of camping at Allegany County Fairgrounds.

At their recent completely sold-out show at 9:30 Club, they offered up an all-you-can-eat buffet of fun. But more about that in a minute.

Jet: A Night of Raw Energy and Rock Revival
Words and photos by Michael Sprouse/Odd Rocker Photography

On a cool, balmy June evening, the 9:30 Club played host to a night that rekindled the raw spirit of early 2000s rock.

Australian rockers Jet, known for their garage-rock revival sound, delivered a performance that was both nostalgic and invigorating, proving that their music still rocks powerfully with their fans. Jet was back. And they weren’t coasting on fumes — they came to blow the goddamn doors off the 9:30 Club.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the Filene Center at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia, buzzed with anticipation. Nestled amidst lush greenery, this unique venue — a national park and performing arts center — recently offered the perfect backdrop for an evening with Heart, the legendary rock band fronted by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson.
