“I am so omniscient, if there were to be two omnisciences, I would be both” — Ziltoid the Omniscient.

Devin Townsend has hit the road, again. And if you’ve seen his social media posts, this could be the last time for quite a while. So a packed house at The Fillmore Silver Spring may have recently gotten their last Devin fix for some time. But what a fix! Devin played a career-spanning set that included music from almost every iteration of his long, storied career so far.

Larkin Poe has been compared to The Allman Brothers Band. And, to be sure, there’s Southern Rock in what they do. They also feature a dual guitar attack by the Lovell sisters, although in the form of a standard electric (Rebecca) and lap steel (Megan). While these comparisons aren’t unfair, they just scratch the surface: The Lovell sisters grew up playing bluegrass, and they continue to incorporate country and acoustic into what they do. The diversity of their influences — Southern rock, electic blues, bluegrass, and more — has led them to develop a unique and eclectic approach, all of which was on display in their recent sold-out appearance at the 9:30 Club.

Rhiannon Giddens wears many hats: singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and historian. Her recent show at The Anthem with the Old-Revue allowed her to show them all off, entertaining the audience while educating about America’s folk music traditions and engaging with issues of race and class.

Live Review: Bob Mould w/ J. Robbins @ Black Cat — 5/7/25

Bob Mould

Like another famous musician named Bob, Bob Mould contains multitudes. In his more than 40-year career, Mould has gone from making hardcore punk with Husker Du to becoming one of the most revered figures in alternative (even if he did write a song called “I Hate Alternative Rock.”)

Along the way, Bob made his solo debut with the largely acoustic Workbook in 1989 and dabbled electronica. A lifelong wrestling fan, he worked for World Championship Wrestling during its dying days. He’s never lost the intensity and fury of his early work, though, and he played loud and fast in his recent sold-out appearance at the Black Cat, blazing through nearly songs in his 90-minute set.
